It has had grease in it beforetimes. In bringing it back to running order, to use to farm with AND to occasionally show. WOULD YOU bring back the origional oil lube system with pipe from gov to bearing, or stick a zerk in it and keep on greasing it??
AND
Thanks to all you guys who have took the time to answer what I imagine seem to you to be pretty ditzy questions. Sometimes over and over until you got it plowed into my mind where a non mechanic could understand it. THANKS> |

The only way to lube fan shaft bearing on JD-A B D G H is to grease the zerk at fan. |

Agreed. And USUALLY you find a pipe plug in the top of the forward fan bearing housing. I was always told Deere intended we remove the plug, install a zerk, grease the bearing, remove the zerk and replace the plug. The explanation I was given was the plug was less apt to introduce dirt into the housing than the zerk.
Don't know if the Engineers in Waterloo actually thought that way or not but that's the story I was told & I couldn't argue with it.
Later. |

OK, that settles it then. See, this was ment to be somebodies parts tractor. Ive got some few parts missing, and some extra parts. I had 2 3/8th pipes and I thought that one was for the gas tank and one was for the fan shaft bearing. They did look somewhat similar, but with an end being bent on one, and missing on another, I didnt think much about it. Intended to replace them both. Now I only have to replace one. Thanks again, |

I think it would be very helpful for you to find someone local with a tractor like yours to compare with. Sometimes just looking can help enormuosly. Dave |

Farmallb, In looking at my March 1950 John Deere "A" dealer parts catalog, PC-RA1 - (3-50) Revised, John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works.
I see two fan bearing housing with tube.
One with just a pipe plug at the front and one with
the pipe plug and a threaded hole behind it for a
ventilator pipe to go to the top side of the breather filter housing that would suck a warm oily
vapor through the tube from the governor housing forward near the front fan bearing and up the vent
pipe, thus oiling the front bearing.
This was for tractors 584000 - 647999 ( 1950 ) |
