Make some dowels by cutting the heads off some bolts of the right size. Grind flats on them to make them easy to get out after you put the head on. No need to use proper head bolts for this: just get some mild steel ones at the hardware store. |

You put the headbolts in before putting the head on cause how are you going to tighten them if the head is on first there nothing but threads sticking above the head after the head is installed and putting a pipe wrench will destroy those threads so you install the headblots first.Make sure the threads in the block are clean and also the threads on the headbolts are clean. Use some lube when installing the headbolts. |

You describe studs, not bolts. In that case I agree with you. No dowels are needed. |

I agree with Gene. YOu need to put the studs in the block and get them tightened up before you place the head. Once this is done this will gove you what you need to line it up. I would also recommend copper seal on the head gasget as these can tend to leak. It is to pain to get the head back of and get it cleaned up again but does a great job getting it sealed. |
