I want to put a new clutch in my wd45, as it slips some. I wanted to remove the grill and radiator, and slide the engine foreward, to clear the jackshaft, instead of removing a side rail, like the IT manual says to do. is it possible? and can I remove the clutch and pressure plate, thru the bottom of the bell housing, like a truck, or does the bell have to be removed first?

Remove radiator, disconnect linkages and steering shaft at knuckle, remove sheetmetal clutch cover underneath, remove bolts to bell housing and front of engine, slide engine forward and lift out of frame.

Eldon has it right, remove the radiator and all sheet metal. I find it easier to split the steering shaft at the u-joint and slide the steering wheel back. That give some extra clearance for the right side block ears to clear. 4 bolts in the back, 2 under the front and slide the engine forward and out. Good time to check the lower rad hose and fan belt as the lower rad hose has to come out to do the fan belt anyway. Bellhousing isn't made for the clutch to come out the bottom. I found a trick using a 3/8 long extension and a 3/4 socket to get the rad bolts out. If you can't find my posts on it here ina s earch, let me know and I'll describe it again.

Thanks guys! I really didn't want to have to support two halves of the tractor, to do this. I split it, a few yrs ago, and replaced the over center clutch, and it was scary to me, trying to support, both halves, and still work around it. This sounds straight foreward, and safer. Probably can use the automotive cherry picker to handle the engine, if it's not heavier than a ford V8.

Overhead hoist shouldn't be a problem. I don't think a fully dressed WD engine weighs much over 300-400 lbs. My dad and I can carry a running one by ourselves.
