tractor backfires when I try to engage the mower. It is a manual transmission.

Check that pto safety sw not loose/bad also check for loose wires on sw,check that pto engage handle not loose or sloppy due to wear causeing same to maintain/not maintain contact with actuating clip for pto sw,check seat sw.

Also adding to what Joe said, check the fuel adjustment on carb, may be a little lean and that can cause popping and backfiring also
|
