Has anyone seen a can like the unpainted one and know about its brand or if it had a special use? Nothing's on it to identify it. I'm thinking of having a buddy paint it similar to the refinished one.

Sorry I can't answer Your question.
But why cant they make them like that anymore?
Handle top and bottom, perfect spout for pouring.
I would clean it and use it!

I remember the gas delivery guy would use a can something like that to fill a 55 gal barrel carrying it from the truck to the barrel.

You nailed it. It's called a transfer can.

Thanks for your responses, think I'll leave it as is. One thing different from new cans, all the joints are soldered.

Exactly, It needs to take a minimum of 3 hands to dispense and dribble slow enough to get you tired of holding it up before you actually fill something to qualify!

I used to have one but the spout wasn't quite as large. We used to call them coal oil cans. Been to many years ago, but I think they were used to fill the tanks on old oil burning stoves.

I used to envy the delivery man who usd one of those to refill Dad's barrels. Times were tough back then and I knew that Dad couldn't afford to buy one of those so we made do with whatever can was available. Using cans for fuel also required emptying the sediment bowl often and cleaning the screen - or the gas line if it didn't have a screen.

I remember my uncle fueling his TD14 with "Jeep" cans - which caused quite a few fuel problems.

Dad bought motor oil in 5 gallon cans which was our gas cans to transport gas to the fields. The only 5 gallon cans with the bottom grip that I remember was on the gas/fuel truck when I was a kid. Didn't have that kind of neck though. I never saw the gas man use it. My brother and I hung around the gas truck when it came because when the driver made out his bill he would give us candy suckers.

Is there a law that prohibits the sale of used fuel cans? Even if there is he could sell it as a decorative piece. They're sold every day in the petroliana hobby.
