The carb bowl drain plug on our Ford 600 started dripping gas. I have the shop manual but there is no part number listed for this and Steiner and Tractor supply only sell the part in a $60 kit. Does anyone know the specs on this part? If it is a standard size I can get it from a hardware supplier, but I can"t really get the specs from the plug that"s in there because it is just a cutoff machine screw from the looks of it and doesn"t have the conical seat at the end where it seals with the carb bowl casting. Thanks. |

The drain plug is basically just a 1/8" pipe plug, available at most any hardware store, but from the way you describe it, maybe you're talking about something else? |

Thank's Rusty. This is a lot bigger than 1/8 inch. I found a picture of it online in a listing for a repair kit and it's a brass plug with a conical seat, about 3/8 inch diameter at the threads. The one that's in there now is just a plain plug and it's steel and it leaks. I'm going to check the repair kit manufacturer site, if I can find it and see if I can order just the plug. |

A good hardware store will have that plug in brass. I'm not talking the hardware department at WalMart though. |

Thanks. After the holiday I will check the local S&H as they have a lot of hardware and fittings. I'll dig up the specs on it somewhere. |

A 1/8 pipe thread is about 3/8 diam. 1/2 inch is about 3/4, 3/4 is about one inch. Maybe somebody who is a plumber knows why. |

Never had a ford carb apart, had an A/C and a half dozen Farmall carbs apart and they all have an 1/8 inch pipe plug for the bowl drain. If you have a decent tap and dye set it should have a 1/8 " pipe tap in it witch is about 3/8" in diameter to compare to what's in your carb. |

Thanks for the information. I don't know all the plumbing parts, but if this is a standard item I should be able to find it at the local hardware. Seems like a common item to lose considering how many times I had the one out of the old 8N. |

I'll have to ask the neighbor, who's a plumber, why they are called what they are next time I talk to him. If it's a standard part I can see why the tractor part shops don't sell it. |

re:pipe thread. pipes are measured on inside dia.for obvious reasons. so the outside thread has to be larger to allow for the pipe wall.
consequntially, a 1/2" pipe, schedule 40,will have an outside diameter of approx.3/4"
And so on for other sizes. |
