I just purchased a 2640 with a 146 loader today. The hydraulics aren't working and my mechanic told me it was the transmission hydraulic pump. It has the high/low and it won't pull itself. I was told that It all quit at one time. I didn't pay much for it so I will part it out if it cost too much to fix. Any ideas on what else could be wrong. Thanks and happy thanksgiving

Measure trans oil level.
Inspect and change/clean trans filter and trans screen.
Measure trans oil pressure at high/low and pto ports

Is your mechanic "knowledgeable" on closed center hyds? Several components besides the trans pump can affect correct operation.

I agree with b&d on needing to check both psi's. Does changing from high to low(vice-verse) of the hyd hi-lo affect hyd operation any? Same thing with pto if it has hyd ind pto? The supply tubes for both hyd hi-lo & pto have a history of leakage problems. How is loader controlled,by scv or ind valve?? If ind valve remove return hose, start tractor and see that no oil flows out hose.

Switching the hi/lo has no effect on it. I will try the pto next time I'm near the tractor

Hey,
You say it has no hydraulics but then you go on to say no Hi-Low. Does no hydraulics mean no steering, no loader no three point hitch, etc. If so the hi-low not working is probably because there is no charge pressure, which powers the hi-low and the pto clutches and then goes on also to feed the main pump. There are many reasons that the transmission pump may not be working from low oil to broken steel lines, to a broken drive part. We need more info in order to guide you where to start. Good Luck!
John

I apologize I should've added more detail. Nothing at all works, no steering, no loader, no lift, and no pto now that I've checked that as well. It would pull itself a little on level ground but not uphill at all. Once it started slipping I just put it in neutral and towed it. It's on my trailer now with the loader down. Someone told me to take the hood off and fill the front hyd resiviour with oil and see if anything would work. That would rule out the front pump being bad? Correct or not?

IMHO the frt hyd reservoir won't hold enough oil for hyd's to function very long if at all.

Your mechanic is correct, you have no transmission oil pressure, you can play around with out side stuff,,,but you will end up splitting it near the shifters, could be pump failure, broken oil pipe, or a failed component...

Look in the inspection cover on the left side of the clutch housing and see if the clutch hub that drives the live power/trans pump is bad. If not that it is inside the trans as stated before.
