My friend has a IH400, 1958 model.

he would like to install a loader on this tractor.

I found one that is off a IH 300 tractor,

Question: do you think the loader would fit the IH400, if it came off an IH300??

He is concerned the Hydraulics are weak on the old IH400, do any of you know how much hydraulic pump pressure would be necessary to properly operate a frontend loader?

can the Hydraulic pressure on the old tractor be test by attaching a high pressure gauge to the Hydraulics lines and would the gauge show the max pressure the lift system has when you activate the lift?

they are asking $600 for the frontend loader, i do not know if it has a Hydraulic cylinder or manual catch on the bucket dump.

Have not got that far yet,

first must know the Minimum Hydraulic pressure necessary to operate the frontend loader and determine if the old tractor still has that much pressure.

Thanks for you assistance!

Check your serial #'s; the 400 was only made in 1954, 1955, & 1956. Any later it would be a 450.
Scroll down a page or two for more descriptions of the differences between the 400 & 450.

I am sure you are right,

I bet the old tractor is a IH450 as my friend assured me the tractor is a 1958 model.

question: did they make a IH450 in 1958?
if not, i will go back and check my dates and model numbers.

thanks for your input,

if the tractor is a IH450 do you think the frontend loader off the IH300 would fit on the IH450?

One from a farmall 300 would work on a farmall 400 or 450. Parts that mount to the frame rails may need adjusted or modified to work due to the width difference in the frame rails between tractors.
Hydraulic pressure should be close to the same for both tractors. 400 tractors are considered low pressure hydraulic tractors. You can check the pressure at a port, but if low it won't pinpoint the cause without more checking. Lots of old 400 tractors will show a pressure between 1000 and 1150 PSI when hot if you are lucky. 1250 psi or a little higher great.
If the loader has cylinders for the hydraulic pressure used you should be able to use it.
Like said if it worked okay on a 300 using the IH engine driven pump it would work on a 400 or 450. If it used a pto pump or other type pump, maybe not.

The 450 could be a 1958 model. Use the Serial Numbers link to the left under "Research & Info" to find out the production years of pretty much any old tractor. If you have the serial for your friends tractor you can look up when it was made.

IH made two different versions of the 300. Farmall and Utility. A loader from a 300 Utility will not fit a 400 Farmall.

Loaders made to fit the Farmall 300 were almost always also made to fit the Farmall 400. The 400 is about 2" wider than the 300, so usually it is just a matter of flipping some brackets, or removing some spacers.

There is also going to be a diferance in length . May have to put some spaces at the rear axle.

Yes. The H, Super H, 300, and 350 were all pretty much the same, as far as size and mounting goes. Same with the M, Super M, 400, and 450.

So chances are if it came off one, it will fit another, with maybe some flipped brackets, as others have said.
