I'm new to this site and was wondering if you guys could answer a question? How late can I plant winter wheat in so. Illinois for a cover crop to hold dirt in a area I cleared.

If your weather forecast is anything like ours in KC area, I would plant it this morning, then hope for rain.

It's very late...but sow it NOW. The temperatures are to be very warm the next 3-4 days. You might get it to germinate and it should be fine. You will not get much if any top growth this late in the year but it will green up come spring....should be fine. I"ve sown wheat as late as Dec. 15th before and had the same results as stated.
If you are only wanting a cover crop, annual rye will germinate faster and provide more initial growth than wheat and it will "green up" sooner in the spring.

If you don't want the wheat for a crop, I would go with winter rye as it will germinate in colder temps. My two cents worth.
