17.5 1020 on 1420 and hp question

Is this a good match for the combine? Also long as I am posting. Everyone says the 1420 engine runs at 2900RPM. Mine runs about 2300-2350 under no load. I am wondering if the 81"s had a lower full throttle speed. Also, as others have stated, it could use a few hp. Does any one know of a turbo kit for the 1420, or is it possible to maybe have a good diesel mechanic turn it up to get about 15-20 more hp? Just could use a little more power in mud and on hills in heavy corn, I also am guessing when I get a bean head it may be short on power as well in heavy beans, also have to think about when I will do rye as well

You need to get your rpms to the rpms it calls for.If it is that low you will pick up alot of power.Your heads are match well to machine.

I have a turbo on mine..bought it that way..not sure if there was another application for the 358 that used a turbo...you definitley need to get your rpms up ..mine will go to about 2900 at high idle usually 27or so under load..turbo really seems to make a snappy little sucker out of it..mine has a straw chopper in it that i wish wasn't there ..they say they suck up power probanly the reason for the add on turbo I run a 15' 820 should handle a little more...green stem beans will be an issue though would get mines attn..and a black cloud following you around...smile

I think I would find a 15 ft platform. Change your air filter and fuel filters and see if you don't gain 200-300 rpm. Btdt

Mine came with the turbo when I got it, someone once told me you could order them with it from IH. I'm glad mine has got it... but I don't think I would try a 17.5 on it.. not with any kind of stem on beans... I know the tire chart on the cab lists up to a 22.5 but they're NUTS for even endorsing that. I doubt it would even lift a 20', never mind run it. As for turning it up, you can do that with a simple turn in of the screw, but every slight bit you gain there I believe is time you take off the life of it.

I ran a 1981 model 1420 IH for 7 years..If I remember right high idle is 2970 rpms and rated rpms is 2700...When I got mine the fuel screw had been bottomed out...In fact I had trouble getting it to idle down...I wouldnt be afraid to turbo a D-358..

In my opinion a 1420 only needs a 4 row corn head and a 15 ft platform..In wheat or milo a 17.5 platform would work..I had some tall green stem beans one year and a 15 ft header was almost too much..

I"m parting mine out and still have the motor,both finals,transmission,radiator,back axle,and lots more..The other day the junk man offered $450 for it with me keeping the motor and I said no way...

The 17.5 foot header will be way too much in green stem beans. You have the smallest combine IH made at the time. They where made for a four row head and a 15 foot header.

You engine is running way too slow. That alone will really kill the power. Check the throttle linkage and make sure it is pulling the pump wide open. I have ran into that several times with the manual linkage that wear and get out of adjustment. So even thought you move the throttle to wide open the pump linkage is not against the high idle stop.

The engine should be a D-358. The early ones where rated at 112 HP and the late ones 124 HP. I have been told the turbo and manifolds off a IH 1206 will fit. You would have to ask a IH expert to variety that.

Myself I would not go to the trouble. The machine has other weaknesses that will cause issues if you turn the power up. I would get the engine RPMs up to where they should be and try that before I did any more pump jacking around.

I have a 1420 with 17.5 1020 flex head. Handles it fine. have cut 60 bu. beans with no problem. You can never have enough power but unless you've got a lot of acres to get over it works good. Get your rpms right, make sure skid plates on bottom of 1020 head are not wore out and plowing dirt, and don't be in a hurry.

The 1206 turbo and manifolds won't work it had the DT-361 in it. Get your RPM's right and find you a 15' header. The 17.5' is really too much for it. You could get by if it is cherry since 15' 1020 heads are as rare as hen's teeth. You may have to lay over some and/or slow down to a crawl when the going gets tough.
