While going through some stuff today I ran across this one-gallon can of Hy-Tran Fluid. It is noted to be for; "All weather use", although it does not show what weight the fluid is. It states, on the can: "For best performance and maximum life - use hy-tran fluid in IH tractor transmissions, tractor hydraulic systems, farm equipment, industrial equipment." It does contain a warning that indicates that the fluid contains: "tri-aryl phosphate". I believe that was a flame retardant and was fairly toxic to the eyes. Stamped on the can is the number: 372-704-R4, which I assume is IH's manufacturer number.

Hi-Tran is IH's proprietary hydralic oil.It is approx.10 wt.(as is most other hydralic oils)It has their own 'speacial'blend of additives.Hi-Tran is acceptable in any/all transmissions/hydralicsystems.Hi-Tran was/is so pure,it was said you could drink it!(as was demonsrated in a seminar)

Hy-Tran is also repackaged as high performance power steering fluid due mostly to it's superior anti foaming qualities.

Discovered this back in the late seventies when Virgil Welch came in to McKnight's in Elwood Indiana asking if there was any possibility that Hy-Tran might have the anti foaming qualities that this fluid he had for the power steering unit in his sprint car needed. He opened the bottle and it was definitely Hy-Tran, only at about 4 times the price of Hy-Tran.

You need to upload the photo to the "Parts and Pieces" gallery on the left, then link it in from there.

The can may actually be worth more than the fluid in it, depending on how old it is.

If you put Hytran in tractor transmissions without a TA, or without a hyd pump that does not have its own reservoir there is the possibility of more leaks, along with more gear clash when shifting. Otherwise it does no harm. But, there is no advantage to Hytran in the pre-TA tractors, which can use SAE 90, 80W90, 85W140, or 140.
