I have a question on a Perkins Diesel serial number. It does not match a typical serial number. The serial number is:

LD038 MX
00153B
5X 0153

Thanks in advance. Any help is appreciated.
This is a 4-236 in a MF 175 S/N 202880

Thanks for your reply. My parts manual and service manual show the engine # should be as you said in your reply. I do not believe the engine has been changed because the tractor appears to very original. Not sure whats going on here. Thanks

I got in a big fight with a suppostabe diesel expert over this, he wanted 'just the engine serial number' I read this off my 165's engine boss, UA 212 etc etc, he said that wasn't a Perkins serial number. some expert huh? I suspect he had an old book infront of him with UK codes, but he was only an hour east of me.. the loser.

Here is the serial number position on my very early British built 175 with the Perkins 236 engine it also starts with 236 UA Also I posted the same for my 188 it starts with 248UA. Most of these Perkins engines would have been built in Peterborough England.

I think you are looking at the casting numbers, which will be raised letters. The serial number will be stamped into the casting on a flat area just in front of the exhaust manifold. I have posted pics of the serial nos of my tractors.

Finally found the pic of mine, see how close to the top of the block it is?
Nicer picture than Sam's. He wears out cameras fast.
I don't know what other people call these machined down high spots in a casting, but we call em 'bosses'.

Thanks for the replys. These numbers are stamped on a machined raised boss on the right side of the block just below where the head and block join at the #1 piston. My MF 180 shows its numbers in the same location as the 175 and as in the photos you provided. Do you think I have an oddball here?
I'm confused!!

I went through all this looking up the perkins.com web site for my MF 240-S. I know you don't care about the 240-S, but here's the info available.

Serial numbers on Massey 240-S rear differential housing;
Left rear transmission rib;
“5U102”

Right rear transmission rib;
“Type 9537 Serial F 05016 Model 240S”

Engine number ….. casting number on right side of engine block =
CE 97070
T 123235 C

CE = “engine family and type code”
= AD3.152 Perkins diesel engine
C = 3.152 Series of engines
CE = D3.152 (152 CID displacement)
97070 = “parts list number or SOS order reference number”
T = Turkey as country of origin
123235 = “engine serial number”
C = date of manufacture, 1997
Information from www.perkins.com
