Hello everyone,
I need some input from you. I used a 10' Bush Hog chisel plow this Fall on my soybean stubble ground and it worked great. The owner's son called me today and wants to know if I would like to buy it. It hasn't seen a shed in who knows how many years. That doesn't bother me too much. The hydraulic cylinder works good, the shovels are pretty well worn down. The only issue is when you want to transport it down the road from field to field. When I got it this Fall, the owner had a clevice hooked in the cylinder bracket and a chain and load binder wrapped around the back beam to hold it up so the shanks wouldn't dig in the ground. That way you can take it down the road or field to field. My question is this: what is a reasonable offer for it? I will post a picture as best I can of it behind my tractor from this Fall. I really like this chisel plow. I was thinking in the $400-$500 range. Let me know what you think, please. Thank you everyone.

Kow farmer, I don't understand.
Are you saying it does not have a transport lock? And the cylinder will not hold it high enough?

I know location affects price. Last one I watched sell was a good heavy duty 10 shank and it brought at least $1000 a couple months back. With so much machinery being scrapped supply has gone down around here and prices are now going up and I am sure it is because of supply being decreased. I would imagine a new 10 shank would run close to 10 grand. So personaly I would be happy to get a good one for a grand. One thing about it there is very little to replace on a chisel not a lot of $$ to put one back into good shape.

I bought 12 shank Bushhog, 3point hitch chisel plow a few years ago for $850.00. It was in extra nice condition. I sure gives my 1456 a load when I hit a clay bank. I think mine has 4 in. twisted shovels.

A new 10 shank is closer to 20K than 10K. Tillage tools have really gone crazy in cost of new.

I think you would have it at a buy at $400-500. It will scrap that high.

There is a Bush Hog brand 8 foot, 8 shank on my local Craigs list with good shovels and a fresh paint job for $2200.00. I'd love to have it but I'd need another 50-60 HP to even start to pull it on my ground.

I'm not quite understanding the clevis and chain deal either, the hyd cyl should lift it up and be out of the ground don't know what the chain & comealong does?

But a well used 10 foot chisel plow here will retail for $900 asking, and see them sell at farm sales for $200-500, so your offer would be right on for me. Perhaps with the cylinder might be an extra $50-100 typically that is taken off on the sales around here. But thrn if the shovels are worn down to nothing that would knock the $100 right back off. You'll be surprised how much deeper and harder it pulls when those are new, does a better job.

I was up at the sale near the 'Cities last week, and one brought about $2000, thought of loading mine up and taking it there, but that was a Green sale and it brought out the folks with money I guess. Wink

They had a poor 22 foot field cultivator, well in nice shape but only had 2 wheels total on it, and was older narrower row spacing (no trash clearance) and it brought over $8000, but it was green.

Anyhow, sorry for drifting, I think your price is in the ballpark.

I'm a couple miles from Kow, basically any chisel plow with 2 inch shovels under 12 feet is scrap price 'here' any more... We are in the land of 2000 plus acre farmers, with a couple of little guys playing around on the leftovers.....

A decade ago I bought a Mowhawk 10 foot from UFC for $900 because I needed one and only one to be found, 2 years later I got one at an auction in better shape for a parts machine for $150. Mages consignment sale down the road from us will have 2 or 3 a year at their summer sale, $300 to $600 would get them all....

I should probably get rid of mine, as I got a Glencoe Soil Saver this fall, but I'm a collector, hard to part with junk sitting in the fence row. Farm auction stuff seems to come here to die. Smile Wife will have a grand scrap iron auction sale some day!!!!

Hi Paul,
Well, if I out live you, maybe your wife will have an "antique" sale with your equipment and then I can buy some. LOL
Thanks for all your input, I appreciate that.

Kow Farmer, sounds like the plow needs a little attention with a welder to get the transport lock working. Since I'm not familar with that plow take this with a grain of salt.

Well if I do purchase it, I am going to figure out what the deal is with it. I can honestly say that it probably hasn't had the best care in the world either by the current owners.

This fall I bought a 10 shank IH #55 High clearance chisel plow for $1500 at Yoder's in Archbold, OH. It was the nicest one they had, with fair 2" points. No cylinder at that price, nice tires and paint. It has noticeable wear on the pull clevis and lift cylinder mounts.

Overall, I may have paid a little much, there were 3 other low clearance #55's in the $1100 to $1300 range. Those had 3" twisted points on them, but I figured the high clearance version was worth paying for, even without the shovels I wanted.

I think yours is worth more like $700-$1000, at least in Archbold. But, That's just me. I may have paid way too much, but it did a nice job behind the old 806 and I'm happy with it, so it's ok. -Andy
