I'm enjoying your pictures of the 1660 combines. We had a 1660 and 1665 special, which ran for many years. Lloyd Jasper in Dyersville Iowa is going to build me 120 scale toy of our 1660. We wondering about the color of decal of Old Abe on the back side of the combine. Can you tell me the color of the decal. Were the names of the colors, Flambeau Red and Dessert Sunset yellow. In your pictures,I think our machines ran more to the orange side of the color spectrum. The old machines I have been photographing are all kind of faded.

here are a few pics of mine, as to color

1969 and prior machines are Flambeau and Desert sunet

1970 machines are Power Red and Desert Sunset

also 1969 and 1970 machines had no Eagle decals on the rear hood sides only 1968 and prior had them, so a 1665 built only 1969 and 1970 will not have them cnt

Bob, on the 600/660 machines they had Case engines, gas or dsl
700/900/960 had a Chysler 225 slant six gas only
800 Case engine, gas only
1000 and early 1010 could have a Case gas or dsl or a Hercules
late 1010 and 1060/1160 Case gas or dsl or Chysler 318 V-8 all set @88hp
1660/1665 had a choice of 318 Chysler V-8 set @100hp or a Perkins dsl also 100hp
most of the gas engines could be LP also cnt

That's about what I thought. My experience is with Gleaner.
They all went from their own engines to automotive ones. Apparently cheaper to buy than produce? Then the jump right to diesels. It's not like the gas engines were dropped from production. AC was still offering their own gas engines in tractors while buying GM engines for their combines! But then they bought the 236 and 248 Perkins when they could have put their own four cylinder version of the popular 301 diesel in tractors! Maybe that's part of the reason they're no longer with us.

thank you for the information and the pictures that will help a lot. I did not know about the color changes and the decals. I believe our machines were 1968 machines. When we get the toy combine I will plan to post a picture of it.
