Had a stray follow me home

This little guy followed me home from Olsons auction in Winamac IN Saturday. Its a 1963 1600 gas. When I saw it at the sale it kinda made me cringe a little bit. The sheet metal was hanging loose, the exhaust pipe was settin down on the hood and leaning backwards, it didnt run great, and it was stuck in under-drive. I stood next to it when it came time to sell, and it went from 1000 to 1750 and stopped. I was keeping my cool with my hands in my pockets, but my buddy Ron came over and started nudging me. So I put my hand up and ran the guy up to 2100 and got it. My first thought was S@#$, what did I just do. So we went back to Michigan and got the trailer and brought her home. The first thing I did was pull it in the garage and started tinkering with it. It has the original cap and rotor, the points suck, and all the plugs are miss matched. So I cleaned the cap, rotor and plugs, and I couldnt believe the difference that made. The miss it had was almost completely gone, it starts as soon as you hit the key, and all its power came back. I got bolts in all the sheet metal, and now its a pretty decent looking tractor. It still needs a carb kit, and I am going to go through the ignition right. Today we started to investigate the Hydra-Power Drive. I threw a gauge on it and it wasnt making any pressure at all. So we started checking the stupid stuff first. The fluid was a little low, but it was still well on the dip-stick. So we went on to the pressure regulator and relief valves. The pressure regulator was fine, wasnt stuck or galled up. So I took the relief poppet out, come to find out, the seat is gone, and the poppet was bottoming out in the port and the oil was blowing right by it. So my dad told me to machine a larger poppet to confirm the problem. I did and that got 50 psi in Hydra-Power drive, but still 0 in direct. At least we know the pump is still making pressure. So tomorrow im going to order a seat and install the right poppet back in and hopefully that takes care of the problem. I originally bought this thing to mount my 74 picker on, but it is so fun to drive im sure it will be used on the planter and disk some this spring.

Oliver had a kit to install a hard seat in the cover. I put one in a 1650 last winter and had no problem getting the part. Your direct drive clutch uses O-ring seals. I would suspect they may have failed.

That looks like a pretty straight 1600 you picked up. If you ever decide to mount the 74 picker on it, be sure to post pictures.

Nice. I've got a narrow front here under the one I have for parts. One of these days I'm gonna have another 1600 or 1550 and put that narrow front under it then restore it just to look at.
