|
|
Hey all. Merry Christmas! Quick question. I need to make a copy of the key for my IH 300 Utility. I only have this one and I"m asking for trouble not having a spare. The local hardware stores can"t seem to match the key I have. The key I have is a Briggs and Stratton key with a key number "C411" on it. I"m going out on a limb and saying this isn"t the original key to the tractor. Does anyone know what the original key number is? Or do you know where I might find another key like this one? I"m just looking for any way to get a back up. Thanks. |

I worked as a mechanic for a number of years on the older tractors and up to new generation JD. I had about 5 keys on a ring and could start most any tractor out there. I suspect your IH300 key would be available from IH. Someone may have made a copy on Briggs and Straton blank |

I don't know if the 300 had a briggs key, but I do know they were a breed of their own. One of those crooked short ones. All IH tractors made after that used the same key up to the 88 series. Ones made before it did not use a key. |

Yeah, it"s a messed up short key. Menards/Walmart/local hardware stored can"t match the blank. I haven"t tried my IH dealer yet b/c those guys have been basically useless every time I"ve went there for this tractor so they are my last resort now, but I"ll give them a shot in the next few days. After that I"ll try the other suggestions here. I"ll post back with what I eventually figure out. Thanks for the help. |

Stieners tractor parts has them and probably some more aftermarket companies also. Some larger used tractor lots used to have the keys to sell also. Looked on this site and didn't see any listed, but you could call and check. |

Like another poster said, the key was common to many thousands of tractors. It is a short key with a rib formed by bending or pressing the steel. It is not a BS key. If you do have a BS key, then someone has changed the ignition switch. The original ignition switch on the 300 is quite stout, and should last nearly forever. I'm quite sure that your Case IH dealer has one available, but any tractor bone yard will have hundreds of those keys.

I am pretty sure it is a B1 key blank. The same blank fits older Freightliner trucks for example. Any locksmith should have it.Mark |
