Pony motor for 70D

Hi, I just picked up a couple pony start diesels. 720D & 70D. My 720D pony cudnt run more perfect. The 70D pony has never ran perfect. Runs sluggish, power seems a bit low. Last time I ran it, wudnt run w/out choke & wudnt wind up @ all. This motor does smoke a bunch. The front 2 plugs definately have spark. Wondering how on earth do U get to the back 2. Why didnt Deere put a pony door on flywheel side ? Any input on how to get @ those plugs or aid to getting that pony running better is appreciated.

Save yourself some time and aggravation...pull the starter out. Makes it much easier to remove the plug wires,replace the plugs and reconnect the plug wires.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel,check the fuel line between carb and fuel tank,line might be collapsed,they are still available at deere.

OK, very good thing to check ther. Im kinna new w/the pony starts so am pretty "green" when it comes to trouble. Thanks for the reply.

Your pretty well have it. Two working coils with ignition wires that match. A spring wire and a post coil doesn't work together any better than a spring coil and a post wire.
Autolite 437 plugs work well. Gap is in the operators manual.
I've dialed in more timing advance on those engines and they work better.
As previously stated there could be 58 years worth of ick stuck between the fuel tank and the carb jet. The hose can fail internally too.
There is a fuel transfer tube with a slotted head on the side of the carb. Spin it out and make sure somebody didn't twist it off thinking it was a mixture adjustment.
Float level is critical..
Ensure the starting engine water pump seal is good.

Just some words of encouragement. Once you have those little engines running right never use a 12 volt jumper on that 6 volt system and always use clean fuel and they will give you years of dependable starting. I had a 730 years ago and it had to start every day to either haul manure or grind feed and it never let us down whether it was 20 below or 100 in the shade in it's lifetime. Everyone else has covered what needs to be done to it. Also they are easy to over fill with oil and that will make them smoke.

On my 720 I have to keep the fuel tank full or it will do that. There is not much drop for it to get to the carb.
