Hi, and Happy New Year To all,
Just wanted to post and see what everyone thought of my find this past weekend . It's a 2003 - 2004 Huskey by MTD . It has 03 as the first two letters on the code number on engine . It is a 46 inch cut garden tractor with cruise control ,variable speed on the pedal ( has the foot control pedal like the hydrostatics ,but pedal will only go on direction ), forward high and forward low and reverse as well as netrual on the lever under the seat . It has three blades on the deck. It has the big back wheel that bolt on with 4 lug bolts . It has a 23 HP Briggs and Stratton OHV twin cylinder engine. The swivel bracket that tighten the deck to engine came loose from the body and fell on the deck and messed up the deck to engine belt in the process which was the reason it was parked . Before a tie rod had broken and was replaced with on wheel out of alighnment whch ruined a tired , but it wouldn't hurt to replace both front tires . Needs carb cleaned but I've had it running with choke pulled all the way out ,needs top of motor took off to clean out mouse nest ,as well as oil change and basic service job , brakes adjusted and a new battery some other TLC . Can't believe my luck that I paid only $25.00 for it as the guy bought it for $2000.00. I bought it from the original buyer .Did I finally do good or what . Any pros or cons with this model ? It's a model 808H pedal drive tractor . I even have the manual for it .
Thanks,
Whizkid

For $25.00 if it runs at all you got a deal! I got lucky like that few years ago. Saw a mower in a local magazine for, I believe it was only $25.00 she was asking. Went to look at it, fifteen and a half hp. MTD. Her husband died and the thing had been sitting under the carport for three years. I gave her the money and didn't even try to talk her down. Got two good years use from it and still have it, needs a little work on it. I think you got the better deal though. |

Good deal at $25, no doubt!
Couple new tires and a little work you should have a good working machine.
If you're planning on using it.
If you are planning on reselling it, check your local market prices.
Don't kid yourself into thinking it's worth any where near $2000 for resale.
From what I can see, it doesn't look like its been beaten up badly. |

It pays to know what to look for. I would have passed right by it, and knowing what you say, still would have passed on it. I just have too many projects. Stan |

Put a fuel shut off valve inline and use it. They have a habit of sitting and the needle and seat(which is aluminum)leaks by and fills the crank case full of gas.The guy thought his wife blew it up cause it wouldnt turn over. It was hydraulically locked up. I bought it for $75 and used it for 4 years and sold it for a lot more. |

Amen to that. I bought an old twin cyl for $125 years ago and after another $60 (deck bearings, tire tubes, etc) it has been a hard worker. It had gas in the crank when I got it and put a shutoff on it first thing. Do that on most of the stuff I have to also run the carburettor dry for long term storage. No gum in the carb when I restart it in the spring. |

I was broke and needed a riding mower in 1995. Bought a used MTD did some work on it to get by for a year. Mowed one acre yard with it till 2001 bought a jd sabre and gave the running MTD to my neighbors. They are easy to work on, parts are cheap, everything you need at Lowes |

If it takes another hundred to fix it up it's still cheap. When my son lived in town and didnt have any money he pulled an old walk behind mower out of a trash heap and mowed with it for a couple of years. It left a cloud of blue smoke hanging over his yard and the neighbor's too, and the governor surged like crazy, but it got the job done. Jim |

While you are tinkering with it, it is a good idea to lube the variable drive pulley, so it works smoothly and easily.
No experience with that model, but a buddy of mine had to replace the large B&S V-twin engine in his mower, which was really expensive. If your engine works good, no big worries. Good luck! |

Good deal. I have used mine for 11 years. You can get parts on line. If it has the welded steel front axle take it off and grease the pivot point. |

Have one very similar to this, also had mine 11 years. Had an issue with the valve guide coming up out of the head on one exhaust valve and causing the push rod to bend. Had a devil of a time with it until I found the answer in a small engine forum. Was also breaking the starter gear (plastic gear, metal ring gear... you do the math) but discovered the starter and ring gear were slightly misaligned, bent the starter mount a little to line them up and no more problems. Otherwise has been pretty trouble free. I get parts at a local power equipment dealer but have also used Lowe's, TSC and an on-line source. Enjoy a great deal! |
