I have an eight horse power Kohler engine on a garden tractor, that starts and runs good, but the muffler glows cherry red in a short time. Why? |

If eng has point ign system, check point gap & ign timing, also check that flywheel key not bent/sheared regardless if point/12v coil,point/magneto or solid state ign.
Other possible causes,hi-speed needle set too rich & unburned gas burning in muffler, restricted muffler due to carbon buildup or loose/broken baffles in muffler.
To check/set ign timing if you don't have eng manual goto link below & download service manual for your mod# eng,ign timing setting/service usually in section 8 of manuals.
