I have to pull the starter & re-install every time I start the tractor. cranks fine & starts right up. Shut it down & try again, nothing, doesnt turn over until I pull the starter again.

Firstest thing that comes to mind is that your starter is not well grounded. Clean the iron where it attaches to the block. My $0.02

As cantankerous as those starters are to take off, and even more so to put in, I would definitely find out what is going on there! Perhaps you've gotten real good at the removal/installation, but there's something simpler than that. The ground connection is a good thing to wire brush until both surfaces are shiny. Also all the electrical connections. If it spins without cranking the engine, you might have a dirty shaft where the bendix thing slides. Doesn't sound like ring gear problem or anything on the engine side from what you described. Tell us more and someone will save you from that!!!

Pull the starter off. Put on 2 -5/16 nuts to hold it together and then use a wire brush etc to clean the starter up real good then do the same to the block where it mounts. Sounds like a poor ground and by taking it off and then back on you move some rust so it makes good contact then the next time no go since it has had time for condensation to rust it again

How are the brushes in the starter? Worn out brushes will do that. Removing the starter jiggles them around and they make contact one more time.

next time it does this.. give it some whacks with a hammer while trying to start.. if it starts, it's worn brushes

Yep sounds like the ground. the brushes & all else inside is clean & shiny. When it"s not working no turn uver, no click, buzznothing.
If contact is made it turns over & is running instantly. Yup. gettin real fast at removal
