I have a 651 that my step father gave me. It has a battery in it that doesn"t hold a charge very well anymore. I could go get the same style battery, but I have the suspicion that it isn"t the right battery to crank this old gal over.It has been converted to 12 volts (along with the alternator and electronic ignitor).

Thanks in advance!

If the starter was left 6V, as they often are, any 12V battery should be ok. Just be careful on length of time cranking, the shorter the better. 6V starters are great when run on 12V. If the old battery works well when charged there's no need to upgrade.

The battery does seem to crank it fine, it just
seems to go dead quick. I try not to let it crank to
long. So I should just get the same part number that
is in it now? I was hoping to find the exact correct
battery size that a 651 with a 12 volt system should
have. As far as I know, this one could be correct,
but there is no reference that I can find online on
which battery it should have.

Thanks again!

Would you believe since it is a 12 volt conversion there is NO CORRECT battery for it since it was made factory wit ha 6 volt battery. What you need is the biggest battery that will fit in the battery box with the highest CCA you can find. That is about as correct as you can ever get. But before I just took the old battery out I would #1 check the system and make sure it is working as it should as in charging as it should. With it not running the battery voltage should read around 12.3 volts on a VOM and with it running around 14 volts. If you do not get either then have the battery load tested first then the alternator.

aven a smaller car battery will work in these machines.

anything bigger tan a lawn tractor battery.. etc..

is it goinf dead due to a load? or just age?

if a load.. pull egative cable one night and check it.. if not going dead.. check wireing.. especially alternator #1 and #2 lines..
