BP round balls

WHo is shooting .44 cal percussion revolver, and do you use .451 or.454? In what make revolver?
Is there some way to buy about 5 each to see what I need?
I read a good tip about new revolvers. That was to remove all the nipples and treat with an anti sieze, a good one is the BC Choke Lube. Before shooting the gun. Avoid frozen nipples down the road.

In the Navy Colt I have 44cal I use the 451. But I do so because that is what came with it and I have not shoot all that came with it yet. Been more then a year since I even loaded it

I have a Ruger BP revolver and I use a .457 pure lead ball. 143 gr.. I use a Lee single mold and use only lead sewer pipe. The ball size is what Ruger recomends. When the balls are pressed into the cylinders a small lead ring comes off the ball thus sealing the cylinder and preventing crossfire.

If you read your paperwork or look into the Lymans Blackpowder handbook, It will explainn everything. I have shot these things for years, and this is what I have always seen recommended. Also remember the grease of some kind to hold the caps in place, and help to prevent chain-fires. he77 to clean but safe. Gary in central Ne.

The reason I asked the question is that the manuals have CONFLICTING information. On page 18 of the Pietta manual it lists .454 ball diameter for the .44 revolvers.
On page 7 of the "Cabela's Instruction Manual"
It lists .451 as the proper ball for large .44 cal revolvers.
So if you have shot these for years maybe you can answer my question?
I looked at a half dozen muzzy sites and the consensus was to try both and see which one leave the desired ring of lead.
I am just trying to avoid buying 200 lead balls , of which I will only use 102.
