I was wondering how big of disk mower I could cut hay with. I have a John Deere 5200 which is 45 HP. I am looking for a 8 footer but didn't know if that would be overkill for what kind of tractor I have. thanks

I had a 2510 diesel, around 55hp, cut with a vicon 7-9 disk mower, pulled it great in 5th, but it would start to heat, never had any problems running if 4th.

depends upon type and how heavy hay is. Seems like the discs work harder than sickle bars

I run a 9 foot haybine with the tractor now and never has giving me a bit of trouble through thick hay.
