Ford 4000 gas

The 65 model 4000 three cylinder gas. Did these gas engine hold up well ? Any information would much obliged.

The 3 cylinder 4000 gas engine was a 192ci from 1965-1968, and in 1968 they increased the stroke to make it a 201 ci to match the displacement of the diesel model, so yours should have the 192 version.

My 1973 4000 has the 201 gas engine and I don't know how many hours it has, as the tach cable was broken when I bought it, and the hour meter read 1700 hours then. Mine still runs great and has plenty of power. It starts on the first crank every time, as long as I remember to open the fuel shut-off valve first. It always requires the choke to start unless it's already hot from running, but that's just the nature of the updraft carburetor system. In warm weather I have to push the choke in all of the way immediately upon starting or it will choke out the engine. In cold weather I push it in halfway and leave it there for a couple of minutes to warm up before it will run strong, but that's true of any older gas engine with a carburetor and a manual choke.

Your 192 is basically the same engine with about 5 less hp at the PTO than the 201. It is a great engine and should continue working strong for years if it was properly maintained with regular oil changes and air & filter changes.

I have a 201 in my 4600 diesel.. love it..
