Something came during the day and got over a 5ft high fence, took a full grown hen and back over the fence with a trail of feathers heading towards the brush - just cant imagine what could do that.

Bloody cold here - main line to septic tank appears to be blocked up - not sure if it is frozen up or coagulated grease - snaked it out but could not reach all the way to the septic tank - so something blocking up about 4 ft from tank or at point pipe enters tank.....or leach field frozen up? Man I hate cold weather.

I witnessed a hawk do that to one of my chickens. I"ve also had problems with foxes and coyotes.

In broad daylight and over a 5 ft. fence sounds like a coyote. Could be a hawk but they usually consume part of the kill at the spot and pull a lot of the feathers out before carrying it off and would probably not leave a trail of feathers.

Funny you should say that - I am off to walmart today to pick up one I ordered - what ever it is is very crafty as I have not seen a darn thing anywhere around.

5 foot high fence only helps keep the birds in but not varmints out if they want in that is. I too have a fence around my chicken pen but I have a hot hot at the top and also once about middle of the fence on the out side. Also to keep hawks etc out I have baler twine running from roof top to top of fence here and there. The idea of that is a hawk or owl will not fly into a place like that since they know they can get hung up trying to get back out

I hope to get them through the next few weeks until it warms up again then re-assess what to do to keep them secure. For the moment I have a radio on a talk show to make it sound like someone is there - decided that Rush Limbaugh would be the best to scare those liberal critters off!!!!
