Monday about 11am the Cincinnati Ohio area had a round of snow sweep in. With in 10 miniets from the start there were white out conditions wich lead to an 86 car pile up on I-275 at the Colrain Ave area. A mother and her 12 year old girl had got out of there car down in the medium when a car about 150 yards down from them hit the medium cable berrier wich broke the cable and it struck and killed the 12 year old girl. She will be layed to rest today. As fast as this snow storm rolled in it was gone, And with in 3 hours most of the snow had melted away. At the same time this crash happend there was a 52 car accident on I-75 above Middletown and a 24 car accident on I-270 NW of Columbus Ohio. All 3 were chain reaction crashes with the same conditions of white out snow. It was a freek accident and freek weather for this area, No one has ever seen anything like it or can remember a freeker storm than this one. My prayers are for the little girl who was killed and her family all who were injured in this accident. May it never happen again. Bandit |

That's rough. I'd heard there was a bad one on 75 in Ohio, must have been the one north of Middletown.
We had one of those freak snows in the spring several years ago. We had left to go get some plow points and cultivator shovels before it started. My oldest son had come home from his auto mechanics class to change his shirt before he went back to his regular high school classes. He got on the snow and ice half a mile from the house and went in to a clump of trees and totaled his pickup. He wasn't hurt, but the pickup was mangled. |

So sad that this happened, I wonder what they were thinking..to get out of the car..??
I ran Coast-to-Coast for 13 years and have seen conditions you could only have heard of..
It IS Winter and everyone should expect and be ready for adverse conditions...(I even carried a little 10 lb sack of Rock-Salt in that big truck).!!
I think people are being miss-led into thinking they are Safe", because of the "ABS Brakes", "Traction Control" and other such imaginary devices..
As with many other areas, Education is NEEDED, not more "Safety Devices"..
May this never happen again...

People are advised to get out of their cars and seek refuge in the ditch away from traffic these days. I personally think I am safer inside the car than standing outside. A hard one to decide when you have just been involved in an accident. |

The fools around here all figure they have to have four wheel drive so they can go in the snow, Dumasses seem to forget they have to be able to stop, too. |

I travel I81 between Syracuse and the northern most towns in New York State. This time of year, especially with the Great Lakes warm and not frozen, you can go from a beautiful sunny day, dry road, 72 mph to 4 foot visability in seconds. Wednesday, there was no snow falling but a 5 mile stretch near Parish had hard packed snow that laughed at the salt. In a 1/8th mile stretch there were 14 cars scattered all over the road. Wish they'd still mix sand with the salt.
This time of year I carry my expedition parka, Carrhart bibs and Sorel boots. Not to mention some trail mix and a full tank of fuel. |

This morning they gave the 86 car number and at noon it was upped to 96 car and truck and simis and said the count may exceed 100. State Patrol, Sherifs office and local Police are still getting accident reports. Most of the people said it was snowing alittle (flurries) and the road was dry and suddenly a white out at 60 mph and ice. The inerstate was closed most of the day to clean up this mess. They were really lucky more people were not killed in this pile up. Just feal so bad for the little girl and her family, She had a twin brother that was in school that day. She and her mother were on there way to Perfect North Slopes for a day fun for her good school work. Very sad. Bandit |

The people passing you in their SUV's are usually the first in the median.
Poor kid. |

Check the involved vehicles. Almost everyone will have all season tires or summer tires. Add to that people driving twice too fast for the conditions. And no, slowing down and being careful does not make up for unfit vehicles. |

We had a bad accident either last summer or Fall.
Two young couples were in a car going at a high rate of speed and the driver hit a tree. Split the car in half killed 3 and severely injured one. The couple in the front seat were ejected
from the car. Hal |

I use to run studded snow tires on the wife's car, but they've outlawed them here in MD. The mail trucks still use them. Back in te 60's & 70's they never closed the schools. We live a little over a mile from the school and my wife always drove her to school. She was always saying how great those studded tires were. I installed the studs in the new tires in the kitchen. Hal
PS: Now the bus goes by our front door. |

I drove through part of that weather pattern on my way from Indiana to the east side of Cincy that morning. Was just light snow blowing across the road but you could see where it might get slick in a hurry. Whiteout never crossed my mind. Didn't think much of it.
Was westbound after lunch to go north when a buddy called and told me to take a different route. My wife was shoe shopping (go figure...) off Colerain avenue at the time. Called her - she was trying to get on the highway but traffic was stopped. I re-routed her. Never thought I would say this, but I guess I'm still thankful she went to one more store to find the right shoes.
As for why they got out of the car.... I guess I would have too. I won't post the accident pics, but you can find them on the local news sites. No way I would have stayed in one of those cars. From what I heard the hits just kept coming.
Sad day indeed.... can't begin to imagine burying my 12 yr old. |
