Buckwheat pancakes

Does anyone like buckwheat pancakes?
Its getting almost impossible to find them in restaurants, and grocery stores. Aunt Jemiah quit selling them years ago, the brand that is avaiable now isn't as good. Years ago the Perkins chain of restaurants had them on the menu, along with maple syrup, blueberry syrup and apricot syrup, they were good.

I haven't seen buckwheat flour or pancake mix for years. Wanted to get a few bushels for a green manure/cover crop a few years back. My seed supplier couldn't find any. Does anyone still raise it?

Makes a course, hearty tasting flapjack. Wouldn't want it all the time, but nice for a change of pace.

Love 'em! Yeh, hard to find buckwheat flour anymore. West Virginia grows a lot of buckwheat, though. I stock up every time I am there, though less frequent now. Wally- World sells a buckwheat mix, though, as you said, not as good as home-grown. Wife does not like them, but I can still make my own, deliciuos with maple syrup on a cold winter morn!!

I do raise buckwheat as a cover crop in my garden, but have never harvested any,my wife doesn't like them either.
The feed mill where I get mine buys them in Louisville, Ky., I think they come from somewhere in Ohio.

The natural foods section at Krogers/Fred Meyers has small bags of all kinds of other types of milled grains. Bob's Red Mill.

Hogdson Mill makes buckwheat hot cereal, I love it, but can't find it very often and now not at all. Wally World had the last I found.

My Mother used to make buckwheat pancakes for us when we were small. I haven't had any in decades and do miss them.

One of the reasons you don"t see any main stream buckwheat is that about 10% of the population is allergic to it (I"m part of that 10% - big time reaction to only a little). It"s too bad because it is a very good food grain, grows well in poor soils and it great as a cover crop to crowd out weeds. I have used buckwheat seed for cover crops and am not allergic to the seed - only if I eat something with buckwheat in it.

Sign me up, I actually like Hodgson Mill mix. I add up to 50% wheat bran , use buttermilk instead of milk. add a little baking powder and ground up walnuts. I follow directions on box other wise.
Same recipe for waffles or pan cakes.

several places to buy the mix. here is one.

Don't use milk in the mix, even for buttermilk pancakes. Use regular 7up. Makes great light pancakes.

Good pancakes from buckwheat. Small local ( NW N.C. ) flour mill makes buckwheat flour. Also wheat flour, both plain and self rising , also cornmeal. Guy at mill told me he gets calls from many states from people wanting it mailed to them but he doesn't have time and labor resources to do so. The mill gets its supply of buckwheat shipped in bags on pallets from South Dakota and I think, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
