Found some old pics that a departed Uncle left behind. I knew he was a MS and served in the islands somewhere, but never knew where. Anyone recognise the gun or the terrain? Guesses would work too?

Looks to be a small AA gun. Clearly somewhere in the South Pacific.
Philippines, or Okinawa, perhaps?

Don't know where it is but I would guess on one of those God-for-saken Islands in the Pacific.
I can even keep this tractor related; my Wife's uncle who just died this past fall was a Seabee on Guam during WW-II and operated a large dozer (Allis-Chalmers, I think) building and repairing bombed up landing strips. For awhile he was ordered to sleep with the dozer and his rifle at night.
We must never forget any of these guys for what they did for us and all the free world.

It is a captured (after having the crap blown out of it) Jap anti-aircraft gun. If it is dated 1942 it likely is on Tarawa or Guadalcanal. To many trees for Midway or Wake. |

It can't be Tarawa if it's 1942 as that battle took place in Nov. 1943. |

Darn sure ain't no "fifties". Could also be New Guinea, everyone seems to forget that we fought there too. Although the official start of the US Army's campaign in New Guinea didn't start unit 1943 US forces under Australian command were involved in 1942.
Judging by the lack of weapons (individual), helmits and other gear I would bet that was taken near a captured port or air field.
Really cool picture, thanks for sharing!

Robert....off topic and we may've had this conversation before (CRS); are you a descendant of John Cunitz, who was killed in the Tuscarora Indian war of 1711? Your name is so very similar to mine........

It does not look like Tarawa or Guadalcanal.
I do not believe it is a 1942 photo.

I"m not sure If I have any ancestry in North Carolina, My family is from Ohio and Pennsylvania, My last name is spelled differently, I guess it;s an old German way of spelling it, but I guess as far as Geneaology is concerned, anything is posssible. |

I cant rule out the Philippines either. I would bet they littered the country. They knew we would probably be back to try to take those islands at least after Midway. |
