Last winter we had to replace one of the spindles on our 285 because the threads stripped. A number of years before that, we had to do the same thing on the other side. The first time, they were stripping and I hit a dead furrow doing tillage work and the wheel popped off. The second, the hub kept coming loose and Dad found the cause. I fixed the threads and built up and turned down the shaft again where it was worn. Good as new now.

The Massey 65's with the standard duty front axles had the same problems, especially when fitted with cast centres. The thread size for memory was 3/4".
Heavy duty models went to a larger spindle diameter as well as an 1 1/4" stub thread. |
