If you have an ammeter hook it up to the side not going to the battery. No ammeter hook it up to the + side of the battery. Get rid of all of the wiring to and from the regulator. Throw in a 12v coil and you be done. You might need a smaller pulley on the alt to get it exited.

The Brillman Company can supply small pulley and coil.
