As r bedell said, orig eng a briggs 16hp,if you check id tag on eng will probably be mod# 401417(180 deg opposed twin-L head)if it is this eng, same has an alternator not a generator, stator for alt is located under flywheel.

Looking at several wiring diag online for tractor output from alt is one wire with an inline diode(unregulated output)this mod eng used several different amperage output alt stators depending on how eng ordered from briggs.

The best thing you can do to help yourself is goto ebay & type briggs twin L head manual in search & buy the paper/cd version,in it will be info on how to id charging system & test/troubleshoot ON ENG charging system, while on ebay also do a search for cub cadet 582,go thru listings, you might get lucky & find parts you're looking for.

Do a goggle search for cub cadet 582+wiring diagram, from row of posted diag, click on left drawing in row, check that sn of tractor in listed range,if it is enlarge diagram/print,The not charging issue could be an on eng problem, wiring harness problem on tractor, bad ign sw,bad ammeter or loose/broken connections, the 1st thing you have to do is determine if charging system on eng working & then take it from as to rest of elect system on tractor.

Look for a rectifier/regulator and use a volt meter to see if you have about 30 volts AC voltage from your stator. Your rectifier may be defective if you have ac voltage. Before replacing the rectifier I would clean all the wiring connections at the rectifier. I found this problem on a JD 140 tractor. Hal
