I usually come to this forum for information about my Fordson tractors but hopefully someone out there can help with my 1968 Simplicity 717 Broadmoor.
My father purchased the tractor new when I was in Vietnam. I have kept it until this day. The battery does not charge. I bought a new voltage regulator for it but still no luck. It has a starter/generator. If I charge the battery with a plug in charger it starts fine which leads me to believe that the starter/generator is good. I think it might be the wiring. Does anyone have a wiring diagram?
Thank you,
Jack Mayers

With the engine at 1/2 throttle use a volt meter to see if there's voltage on the A terminal on the S/G. Your S/G may need rebuilding. Hal |

Your S/G is getting is battery voltage once the battery is charged using your battery charger. Use a volt meter set on dc volts measuring across the battery terminals when the engine is at 1/2 throttle or better. Should see around 14 volts or better. If you only see 12 volts your S/G isn't charging. Is that a Delco S/G? I have the same setup on my Wards tractor made by Gilson. Hal |

I will check first thing tomorrow. Do you know if there is a rebuild kit available for the S/G? |

I'm at work tonight but I think it's a Delco also. |

I have an IPL that has the wiring diagram.
Go here:

Use #990425 as your model number for the 717.

Remove the S/G and take it to a shop that repairs
alternators, starters and generators. They will disassemble the generator after installing it on a test machine. They will machine the surface where brushes ride and install new bearings & brushes. I had mine rebuilt several years ago after almost 40 years of use. Check terminal A for voltage as I described earlier. If you have voltage there your wire may be broken. I paid $53.00 for the rebuild on the S/G. Hal |

I have a spare Delco S/G that rotates CW. Here's a pic of my tractor and you can see the S/G in the photo. Hal

Nice tractor. I didn't get a chance to check it today. Hopefully over the weekend. I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks for the information. |
