5000 seems to be slipping

hi all, i recently purchased a 66 model 5000, it seemes to be weak in the tranny at times, it doesnt matter if its in low range or not, i have to use 1st gear to get me out of a jam alot, is there anything that i can look for? i know that this is not the way it should be, also my hydraulics are surging, could they be related to my issue??

Assuming it's an manual trans and not a select-o-speed, and the clutch is slipping? Is the clutch adjusted correctly with about 1.5" - 2" of free play at the top of the pedal? If it is, your clutch is probably worn out.

thanks for the reply chris, yes its 8sp, and no free play in clutch pedal, when i put a load to it on any kind of incline it stopps, when i clutch it i can feel the clutch enguage and dis enguage, then i have to go to first gear and crawl till i get on level ground b4 upshifting

At a bare minimum you need a clutch adjustment. Not sure what the free play is on that unit, but would guess it to be around 1½ inches.

If it can't be adjusted to provide proper operation, you'll need to rebuild your clutch.

I think you found what's wrong, you said there is no free play in the clutch. There should always be free play in the pedal, or the clutch may be slipping ( and burning itself out in the mean time). You should loosen the linkage on your clutch pedal to give the proper amount of free play (don't know what it is for a 5000, but for a 3000 it is 1.25 to 1.5 inches). Try this adjustment and see if it improves.
