Help with my MF40B Please?

Hello. I am new to this forum and now a MF 40B owner. If anybody could be kind and patient with me, I would greatly appreciate some advice and answers. As you can see from the pic, its a 40B and has a name plate on the bucket frame that says MF 34A.

I need to ask 2 questions as well as if you guys could help me with a round about year it may be?

It's a diesel and a strong runner. It has some leaks in one of the hydraulics and leaks pretty good out from behind a plate on the left hand side under the instrument panel. The plate is about 2 inches round and has 2 bolts in it. Was wondering what that was. I'm guessing power steering. For the life of me, I can't see where to add power steering fluid. Also, my son crawled under it and noticed a oil pan that was loose. it was right under the machine, under the gear shifters. He noticed a cover he unscrewed that is right next to the shifters and said he could see gears. I'm wondering if that is where you fill the transmission and if so, is it the same hydraulic fluid you use for the loader? If it is, can you fill that for the tranny and loader and then just check the dipstick up by the cab for the hydraulics? I'm thinking that the tranny runs off the same hydraulic fluid that the loader hydraulics run on but can't be sure. I will be buying a service manual this week.

Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated!

I have one which is a 79 model. Don't know what plate you're
talking about but i'll look tomorrow. Power steering fluid gets
added right in the pump on the engine. I think the pan
underneath you describe is where the transmission/hydraulic
filter is. The cap on top is where you add fluid. I put hy-tran
fluid in mine which is a shuttle shift. The instant reverse might
be different. Dont know for sure. The loader is separate. It
runs off a pump on the front of the engine. You fill and check
that in front of the loader joystick. The 34a is the loader
model.

There should be a plate on the lower left dash that has the
tractor serial number on it. With that, it is possible to determine
the manufacture date. I would guess somewhere in the late 70's
to 80's. If up under the left dash, that would probably be the
engine oil pressure gauge. It has hydrostatic steering, so if the
power steering, it would be from directly under the steering
wheel if not one of the oil lines. Steering has it's own separate
system powered by gear driven pump on right or left of engine
at front. There should be a filler on pump reservoir. Is it instant
reverse or the manual transmission with clutch and forward
reverse shuttle lever at the left of the dash? Transmission and
3pt oil go in the filler to the left of the shifters. Loader hydraulic
oil goes in the right side loader frame post, ahead of the loader
control valve. There should be a filler cap there with a dipstick
attached. If no dipstick, full is approximately 18" down from
top. Loader hydraulic pump is behind grill driven off front of
crankshaft pulley by an extension shaft that goes through axle. If
it works, should be a link to agco online parts manuals.

Sorry for not mentioning, it is instant reverse if instant reverse has the forward/reverse peddles on the right and the 2 shifters both have just hi/lo on both. the plate thats on the left of steering wheel, it looks more like hydraulic fluid and not motor oil. We tightened it up and seems ok now. So if the filler cap next to the shifters is for the tranny, do you know if that takes the same hydraulic fluid the loader takes or a different fluid and how do you know when it's full?

Then it is instant reverse and that is where you top it off. The trans
fluid level is checked with dipstick at your right heel, sitting on
tractor. Permatran (by MF/AGCO) is specified for both. You could
use any equivalent TDH fluid. Did it look like an oil filter housing
where your leak was at? If so it might have been the trans oil filter.

That's the weird thing. Where the leak is(that 2" round disc with 2 bolts in it)looks to be attached to the power steering housing under the dash.

So if I understand you correctly, I can use the same hydraulic fluid I use in the loader for the tranny. I bought a 5 gallon pale of universal hydraulic fluid at Tractor Supply. Hopefully that will work, if not, I'll buy the stuff you're talking about.

I think the Permatran number is MF1134A. It should say on the pail
if it meets that. Your pail of stuff is surely fine for the loader, but
make sure that whatever you put in the trans, it is meant for trans
and differentials, as I think those fluids have different lube,
pressure additives than regular hydraulic oil. Maybe someone else
who knows more will confirm.

Thanks MK. My stuff does say it's for trannys, wet brake, hydraulic cylinders and pto I believe but I will look for the stuff you mentioned for the tranny.
