Generator vs Alternator

My generator has died, and is unrebuildable. Theres a fellow about an hour from me who builds custom alternators, he can build a self regulating 6volt positve ground for around 140 dollars. as this will mean i can stop replacing voltage regulators every year, im thinking about going this route. Thoughts?

It is not uncommon to rebuild the GM 10 and 12 si to 6-8-12-24 volt with either neg or pos ground.
If 6 volt positive Gr fulfils your needs I would say do it. Most folk go with 12 volt neg Gr.

only 1 problem-nothig runs on 6 volt,u wanna use electric winch?nope.electic anything?nope,12 volt for me and the te.

i'll like to ask a question too,, not using a winch, etc, and not changing anything,,would i have to rewire around v/r, remove wires or what do i have to do, if i change out to alt.. my to-20 is still 6-v pos gd genny...

well all this tractor does is run a sickle mower, and deal with the bigger snowfalls. However it is stored inside in the winter, i have a winch on my truck, so i think i will stay with the 6 volt system.
To change to a 12 volt system, i have done it on another tractor, you need a new coil or a resistor in line, adjust your points, and dont over crank your starter, very easy to burn it out with 12 volts.

Do it. Unless your going to show the tractor and be a purist I would upgrade to the alternator, actually I did. I put an 8 volt pos ground in my TO30 and am very happy. The original parts are stored so if I need to I can go back to original.

My two cents
