i have a good hesston 5580 round bailer now and was looking at a gehl 1860.. i have no problems with my hesston but i would like to get a lil tighter of a bail out of it.. witch bailer is better and whats the things u hate or like about the bailes.. does anone know a trick or adjustment i can make to my hesston to get more tension on the springs.. mabe take a link out of the chains on the springs.. or anthign

Others have said try slowing ground speed. I will try that, if I have the time, LOL!

what about the gehl 1860.. are they junk.. i know they aint a open throught.. but its cheap.. i mean dirt cheap.. any thoughts on it

I've been running Gehls since 79. Never had an 1860,but I don't have any reason to think there's anything wrong with them. I think the 60 series balers had a roller in the bottom instead of a table belt. Had the air over hydraulic tension too.
My next new baler,I'll probably go the other way,from Gehl to Hesston,but only because they don't make the Gehls anymore.

Generally more rpms and less mph is a starting point but your conditions may dictate otherwise. As far as what you got vs. the Gehl, just remember the Gehl is now a "make your own parts" machine when you need something special.
