Whats all needed to put a 1000 pto shaft on a 285? I found a craigslist ad for a housing for 1000 rpm, but Dad was always under the impression that all you had to do was swap out the shafts, that they had different splines or whatever inside that engaged with a different internal shaft.
It's nothing we need as our only implement with 1000 rpm is our chopper, and we pull that with a Oliver 1855 that's putting out 105 HP at the pto. It's just one of those things that'd be nice to have in case of either future implements or if we're in a bind. Maybe for opening up the corn fields, as our 1855 doesn't fit between the rows.

You just take out the four 1/2" screws holding the 540 assembly in place and bolt the 1000 rpm assembly (the one advertised) on in its place.
If you do not buy that 1000 rpm assembly then let me know, I could use it.

I sent an email, but waiting for a response. Think I'm gonna go for it.

I bought it. The housing is shorter and so is the shaft, makes sense so then the length is right for the PTO shaft to the center of the drawbar hole, instead of moving the drawbar. The guy bought 2 of them at an auction a couple weeks ago just down the road from his place (Dad knew about the auction, but didn't tell me about it or go himself) and they had 3 285's, and they used the 1000 RPM to run stalk shredders in the fall. Maybe a few other odd jobs.
He saw the shafts on the hay wagon separate from the tractors and bought them, and was hoping to buy one or 2 of the 285's but they went higher than he was willing to go. Said he sold the other one already so a guy in the southern part of the state.
In his shop he was making an articulated tractor out of 2 large Massey L&G tractors. Sounds like he did it a while ago, but the 13 HP engine was too weak so he was swapping in a 23 HP engine instead... Was pretty neat.

That was a good find. Usually people are asking $2-300 for those. And that one that you have is the first 1000 rpm one I have seen. The 2 or $300 ones are always 540.

It's almost like a unicorn. Plenty of people know about them, but i've never seen one in person before myself.
I had a cousin who wanted to run his 1000 rpm discmower with his 285 but he couldn't find the shaft, and the dealer said they were hard to get new as well. He ended up just using his 399 on it. Sadly he was killed almost 5 years ago in a farm accident, and then everything was sold dirt cheap at auction.
