I have a Funk six with a cracked block. I replaced the engine with another 226 from a 51 truck. Installed the cast oil pan on the new engine. Now the starter is barely able to turn the engine (even with 12 volt batt). With the spark plugs off seems slow too.
This seems to be new rebuild engine (assembly lube still on mains).
Any suggestions? |

I had rebuilt the 6 cyl OHV engine in my 1952 8n Funk conversion a few years ago . It was the very first rebuild ever for me . A friend helped me with some reassembly claiming he was an ace at mechanics .Well when it was all done & ready to start , it wouldn"t even budge . So I started disassembling it carefully & checking everything as I went . Finally discovered he had the mains & rod bolts over torqued .Also discovered he put the wrong bolts in when he mounted the pressure plate . Those bolts were too long & against the flywheel - not letting it turn at all . After I finished retorqueing everything & reassembel it all back together , it spun over nicely & started . Purrs like a kitten . Made me more aware of those guys who brag about themselves & their mechanical abilities over & over . Hope you find your problem & get her purring again . God bless , Ken |

Starter may be bad.
Has the engine run since it was rebuilt? If yes, you may consider pulling the tractor to get it running and things may loosen up. Really depends on the confidence in the rebuild. |

Pull the plugs and bar the engine over. You are looking for low turning torque not breakaway torque. If it is low focus on electrical starting with the battery. Don't assume anything. Gerard |

I never saw it running and it looked very clean inside. The engine oil was very clean too.
It is on the test stand now. But I guess I could install and then pull. That should get her (or him) going.
I am going to take the oil pan off. If that does not make a difference-maybe the rope seal too tight. Then I can try the pulling idea.
If the oil pan that the cause then it has to be something with the rotating assembly??? Torqued too much, ?????
Thank you all for the replies. I was hoping to see it running soon.
Some pics on this link if you are interested.

Did not replace any bolts other than the oil pan and torqued to 15 lbs. |

Rope seals are usually very hard to turn at first. I have usually turned them about 25 turns and then they loosened up. |
