New Holland H6740

My dad is looking at buying a disc mower from the local New Holland dealership. They have a 2000 model h6740 New Holland that was traded in previously. Are there any problems that occur with this type of equipment after 13 years of use? I think a 5610 Ford should have enough ponies to run this thing & I have read in a precious post that it should be run @ 540 pto, no more or less. What should I look for on this thing?

I've cut hay with a 5610 & NH 617 disc mower which is similar to a H6740 except one size larger as the 617 was a 9' cut.

Check all the turtles and make sure none of them have much play in the bearings. Also make sure the turtles are not worn too thin. They can explode if they are too thin/cracked. Other than that there is not much to go wrong if the lube is not leaking out of the cutter bar.

A 5610 is plenty of tractor, as far as problems that depends on how much it was actually used and how it was maintained and operated. You can make a fairly accurate guess on all those points by looking at it close for general wear, turning the disks and feeling for rough spots and any disks that don't turn in unison, checking for leaks, checking that all grease points have seen grease and asking about the previous owner, probably a small farmer because custom operators like 9 and 10 foot mowers.

I would like him to get a 9' mower so the reason wider cut, less time cutting & maybe less fuel consumption in theory. What about the early mowers like pre 2008?

NH 617's are good machines. One just needs to be very careful when buying a used disc cutter
