Elenco 4x4 dogleg decal

Is this decal something that was originally supplied with an Elenco conversion, or is it something somebody came up with years later?

Good question, I have wondered about that also. I bought my 841 with Elenco from the grandchildren of the original owner who said he bought the 841 new. I dont see any trace of the Elenco decal on the doglegs, but the tractor as had at least one repaint through the years. Someday if I get it restored I think I will add the decal.

I was just wondering about them.
I see George Bradish sells them in 3 different colors (with a red, blue or white "ELENCO" logo with black lettering otherwise). I dont see them in the contemporary sales literature Elenco put out- either on the tractors shown in the brochures after they converted them, or on any parts list- but I still like the looks of them!
I too plan on putting on a set (when that distant day arrives and my Elenco is finally complete) even if they arent 100% historically accurate.

For what it is worth! Back in the day when Elenco (Elwood Engineering Company) was building 4 wheel drives in the late 50s & early 60s I worked at a Ford dealership and we installed 3 of them and I do not recall there ever being a decal to be installed on any of them. When the Elenco 4 wheel drives are mention always reminds me of the time I had to replace the sprocket-driveshaft assembly in one of the Ford's ON I-80 in Iowa City Iowa.I-80 was being newly constructed at that time.

My elenco was painted blue so it was probably stripped off if it was there. Best to give Tony Jacobs a call since he still owns the elenco company.

Hello Warbaby , The decals are FAKES they have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the Elenco business past or present . Thanks Tony PS if you sent me an email I never received it , I have only had three of them since the beginning of the internet .

Thanks Tony!

I sent it via your AOL address. I didnt >think< they were still an operating concern!

I don't know what they may have been original to, but I am sure that the original paint 841 that I was around a lot in the mid sixties didn't have them.
Actually I'm not 100% sure either. I have these decals that came with the manual and paperwork that the dealer would give to folks when purchased. My Dad was a Ford dealer and it seems like maybe nobody ever bothered putting these things on. I am going to recreate them with my vinyl cutter and put them on my 800 with an Elenco frontend.

Good for you! I had never seen or heard of an 800 with Elenco until last N-newsletter, and now you have one. Of course anything can be transplanted if a guy really wants to. Did your dad sell them originally with Elencos?

Thank you Jman6716 for posting, very interesting to see. I wonder if the Elenco decals you have were not installed as they would cover the Ford decal if installed where shown on the hood side. Have never seen these before, so very neat to see.

Hello Jman , I have owned the Elenco Company for the past 40 years now and have Never seen those Decals . I am still making parts today for the kits . Do you have the decal that went on the Foot Rest / Driveshaft Guard ? I have a partial one of those early water slide decals but it is incomplete and have been able to complete it . There was also a decal that could be used on the glass doors of the showroom have you seen those or did your father have one of those ? Everything else you show looks like stuff I have as the literature changed little over the years . Do you have more than one set of the decals ? I would be interested in a set for patterns also as I have no intention of closing down yet . What state are you located in ? The vast majority of Elenco’s were sold in the northeast, during the 40 years of my business I have had over 400 of them . Elenco was originally in business from 1948-1978 . I bought it in 1988 because there was so many still working in the Northeast and no parts were around for them . Thanks Tony

Hello Pat , Since those Decals were printed at a shop in Aurora originally I would bet with 99% accuracy those were originally for the later Cast Axle kits . Elwood had shops in Elwood to begin with them moved to Joliet then to Aurora and finally to North Aurora . Plus if you look at the little operator decal it is for the later kits that have the disengage-able transfer case which came out in Aug 1960 so it couldn’t be any earlier than that . Tony

I also have an 840 Ford with Elanco system, front loader and back hoe. It also has cast rear centers.
The man I bought it from in central New Hampshire said his father had it since the 1970's.
The engine is a ford factory rebuilt and the tractor was painted blue at some point.

Hello Joe , If you look around in the archives you will see my shop phone number listed if not just message me if you need any information . If you have an 840 it’s older than 1957 otherwise it’s an 841 and it’s 1957 and up . Do you have any pictures of it ? Elenco is short for ELwood ENgineering COmpany then corporation . Thanks Tony

Ford didn't make the 840 before 1957 (which some people find hard to believe). I have a 1957 840 with 19-97 loader and 713 backhoe. It was made just prior to the switchover to the 8X1- Series. My serial number is 144875. I have yet to find an 800-Series tractor with a higher serial number although there are probably a few out there. I'd be interested to know Maineman's 840 Serial Number.
