JD H starter Bendix not disengaging

Ok, I removed starter on H for a general cleanup and lube...had to remove mounting bracket to remove starter....not a big deal. Took a wire brush to all the teeth on the ring gear. Put back together and tractor spun over super fast (with plugs in)...that's great. Once I got it running with new condenser, now the Bendix seems to be still engaged after tractor starts. The Bendix is in great shape, now super lubed, and slip clutch on end works fine. I seems like the geometry has changed after cleaning up bracket and place where it mounts. Perhaps the whole starter moved towards center of tractor after things were cleaned up. There wasn't any gunk behind the starting bracket on the side of tranny. Well, the Bendix seems to have moved so starter gear is continuously engaged with flywheel teeth. The problem is, the mounting bracket has the integral snout that covers the gears that a guy wants to look at and see the problem.

Lubing it may be your mistake. I always leave them dry but make sure it slips freely on the shaft.

Lubed it well with what? Hopefully not grease! As mike stated should be dry with maybe some dry graphite or similar!

If you remove the circular guard around the flywheel and squat down a little to look, you can see if the starter gear is clearing the flywheel ring gear and if the starter gear is fully retracting outward after starting the engine. Also, be sure your crankshaft end play is set correctly which will prevent the flywheel from moving outward toward the starter gear...

If you remove the circular guard around the flywheel and squat down a little to look, you can see if the starter gear is clearing the flywheel ring gear and if the starter gear is fully retracting outward after starting the engine. Also, be sure your crankshaft end play is set correctly which will prevent the flywheel from moving outward toward the starter gear...

Yes, I thought that removing that guard ring, one might be able to see the gear interplay. Yes, crankshaft endplay might be the issue also. I may end up putting spacers (washers) between starting mounting plate and transmission to which it is bolted....the 3 bolts. Might need to get 3 slightly longer bolts for that move.

I think it would take an ungodly amount of end play to cause that. It should only be .005-.010. I'm thinking you had the bendix and starter apart and may have reassembled it wrong. Easy enough, done it myself.

Starter worked no prob before removing. I just took off the brush access hole cover and sprayed some brake cleaner to remove some gunk. I just lubed the bendix gear...didn't remove bendix at all.

Spraying a solvent into the starter might have moved some of the contaminants around, and likely did not removed them. Disassembly, manual cleaning, complete inspection, and light lubrication in the appropriate places is a better way to establish its condition and potentially restore reliable operation.

The spiral spline of the shaft and mating spline in the starter gear drive need to be clean, free of contaminants and burrs, and at most very lightly lubricated with a dry grease.

Starter was removed and Bendix spiral was cleaned, lubricants removed...re-installed. Works now...Thanks everyone!
