PTO Lubricant for 1550 Oliver

My Operators manual does not indicate what lubricant should be used in a 1550 Oliver. In the process of purging all the fluids.

I'm think 80-90 ?

Your title "PTO lubricant" makes me think you may not know that the proper level of gear oil in your differential/transmission also lubricates your PTO bearings and gears? A 1550 takes at least a 5 gallon pail.

Tom, There is certainly some truth in what you said. (After owning it for two years I had not check all fluids). Thanks for giving me a nudge...

Question: Hydra-Power Drive: Manual says use ATF. What came out while draining was oil type fluid. I plan on filling it with ATF. See any issue with having some contamination?

I did purchase 10 gallons of 80-90 for differential/transmission

Personally I would just continue to use a light hydraulic oil in it if thats what it was running. AW32. I have bought tractors that had what appeared to be hydraulic fluid in HP and they work fine. As far as ATF and hyd fluid mixing I really dont know.

The 1550 PTO takes 80-W90, same for the transmission. Manual calls for 8 gallons in the trans but there was a service bulletin to increase it to 10 gallons by adding an elbow to the level plug on the right side. Fill to the cap. PTO and trans use the same lube but they are separated. Maybe a gallon or so, no where the five gallons stated. Oil level plug on the side. Hydrapower takes Dextron/Mercon ATF.

The bigger Whites needed a heavier hydraulic oil in the over under, but I tried it in my 1600 and 1850 and they slipped and didn't shift right. I have the best luck with Dex/Merc combo' in the 1550, 1600 and 1850. I wanted to change so I didn't have to have another type of oil around, but it didn't work out too well.
