Is this spring retainer bracket for the governor compensating spring mounted correctly? It “appears” it should be flipped putting the hole towards the battery tray? I’m ordering a new spring and don’t have the old one. Thanks!

Hi 65Camp,
I put them like in the manual, so yours looks good to me.
This image also showes where the lever should be pointing at the lowest rpm setting on the quadrant.

I have mine installed wrong on both tractors then. However that piece only has a spring hole on the long portion. the '49 will not return to complete low idle without tugging on the short rod and it also has a home made spring anchor. It seems like my "51 may not be operating correctly either. I am going to flip that anchor around and see what happens.

Hi Jim,
Shouldn't need to tug the short rod. That gov compensating spring just helps the hand lever to stay where its put.

Short arm and carb should move freely, with no binding. Worn gov housing can cause the arms to lay closer to the block, and impede travel.
Could also check the short rod's end springs-- they can fail. When clipped on the short arm should measure 7 1/4", and not get longer when pushed or pulled.

I just went out and looked at the linkage and quadrant spring. The anchor is actually the missing support tab for the spark plug wire tube. This was done in 1966 when the tractor was overhauled. I also had the long throttle rod on backward from the service manual illustration and the throttle quadrant spring was installed in a way that it was binding. The long arm on the governor has a lot of wear. I need to take it and the housing to a machine shop for repair. I have not read good reviews on aftermarket governors or parts. I rebuilt the engine in 23/24 and it is stil a work in progress. Engine runs great, just the governor/throttle linkages need attention. The linkages on the '51 look OK.
