    630 Power Steering Issues

I've gotten the wedges out by using a 1" 1/2 drive deep socket and an air hammer. The 1" socket fits over the wedges but pushes down on the collar holding the wedges in place. The air hammer works great for rattling things loose. If you don't have an air hammer you can try a regular hammer. If...

    Mounted corn pickers

Never done it myself but Grandpa always said it took two guys most of the day to mount or dismount the JD 227 on the A or 620. One of the guys at work talks about working on the tractor with the picker mounted on. I can only imagine how fun that was...

    630 Power Steering Issues

Might be worth your time to do the leak test for the vane seals as explained in the book to see if there's any issues in the pedestal. Wouldn't be the first time there's 2 issues going on.

    JD 60 Power Steering

I have a 620 that sucked engine oil into the power steering to the point that it overflowed out the power steering vent. What a mess that made. That's exactly what mine's doing. Couple years ago I had it running on the elevator for ear corn and the next day I checked the engine oil and there...

1947 John Deere A Compatibility with John Deere 30 Combine

My only thought would be is being it's a '47 that's a twin stick transmission which is geared faster than the later single stick tractors. You'll be going about 2.5 mph in 1st gear depending on tire size and rpm's. Hopefully the combine does alright at that speed.

    JD 60 Power Steering

Yep, Mine sucks engine oil into the power steering through the fan shaft. I might have more than one issue going on but regardless I'm going through the whole assembly some day.

    JD 620

Of the 4 tractors I mentioned earlier my 620 is probably the next worse one to the 630. I've done a few hours of plowing with mine and haven't blown anything up yet. But it sure puts a lot of blowby out the valve cover breather.

    4020 Main bearing question.

Best way I've been taught to do it is with a flexible paint scraper with dull edges to push the top half bearing out of the block. Once you get the bearing out as far as the scraper can push it, you can usually grab onto the bearing with your fingers and roll it out the rest of the way.

    JD 620

Only way to tell is pull the crankcase cover and start feeling inside if there's a rod, wrist pin, or something loose. You may not actually find anything loose however. I know of 3 620's and a 630 that to me have a what I would consider piston noise coming right from the engine block area. The...

Oil Leak at block nuts JD 50

Does the tractor have an automatic fuel shut off sediment bowl? If so are you sure there isn't oil dripping from one of the oil lines going to the sediment bowl.

    66 human cases

Yep, they're really good at planning these things and using them to their advantage. Problem, reaction, solution.

    John Deere 60 Starter

I had a generator apart a few months ago and they had a piece of cardboard from like a cereal box wrapped around the opening. Judging from the picture on the cardboard I think it was from either the 60's or 70's. Don't tell anybody I put the cardboard back in:rolleyes:.

    Great day to grind feed.

I've always been taught "it's easier to grind feed when you can, instead of when you have to". When you wait until you have to then the weather is crappy, equipment breaks, it's dark outside, ect. Although for a lot of folks the "have to" comes everyday.

Model A disassembly has begun head gasket question happy Boxing Day!

Agree. Next one that I do I might try Permatex Aviation form a gasket on the head gasket. Last one I did I used Copper coat and it's still holding fine, but I remember reading a service bulletin saying to use I think Permtex no 2 or something like that??? Whatever it was the modern version is...

    Jd 4640 4430 lights

To access the wires going to the lights there's a metal cover on the backside of the light assembly under the fender. If I remember right the screws for the cover are self tapping and tend to strip out or break off. The LH fender light harness connects to the main harness under the LH front cab...

    Needed more space

Great idea. I've also seen them somehow parked vertical with the snoots pointed straight up. Not sure how that's accomplished though. When we get a new head in at the dealership they come on shipping stands with the head facing vertical. It gets picked up off the truck using the forks on the...

Valve tappet setting rule of thumb

About the only "rule of thumb" I can think of is the exhaust valve is usually set with a larger gap than the intake due to more heat on the exhaust side. But a lot of older engines like the JD two cylinders.022"(?) was used for both valves.

John Deere Model B Oil Control Ring?

In my opinion that oil ring is not right. I put new rings in my '51 B (original pistons) about 7 years ago using an aftermarket ring set from Yesterdays Tractors and the oil ring in that set had holes in it similar to your original oil ring. I'm guessing you got yours from JD???

    Strait pipe

I've never really cared for the sound or looks of a straight pipe. However, I've got a muffler on my Unstyled A that doesn't have any baffles inside. Sounds and looks good. And it wasnt as loud as I thought it was going to be while plowing. The 620 with original muffler was louder than the A I...
