    Piston ring cleaning

One thing I'd like to add is, (and I've resurrected a number of old red corpses), when reusing inserts or main bearings I always swap them top for bottom unless wear is really minimal. You don't have to think about that long to get why. gm

    Canned Allis

Jw, We milked too but went to pipeline/bulk milk about 1960 in order to remain grade A. We farmed with IHC tractors primarily. I did one can in Red and Cream colors, added a IHC decal on the side and a Holstein on the lid. I left it my dad's deck by his glider. Good fun and nostalgic.

    Winter project update:

Thanks Wes. Yup, cutoffs and t-shirt weather ,,,, almost. I think it topped 70 here a couple days back. This went on the lid of the binder can, since we milked Holsteins and farmed with Farmalls. It goes on pop's deck. gm

    How to spread sawdust?

I'd probably talk to someone at my state extension office in a state university. There's a reason they use wood shavings for mulch and it ISN"T to promote plant growth. gm

A couple of times in history I've tried to paint over an older coat of anonymous origin just to have it curl up at the introduction of the new stuff. Any comments or suggestions are welcome as I am currently about to mix brands again. thanx in advance,,,, gm

How Do I Hold Stuff In a Vise Without Damaging (gears, threaded stuff, etc.)

I lay a shop towel between the jaws,,,, the more sensitive the subject, the more folds in the towel. This is seldom necessary for what I use the vise for. If I had frequent needs I'd try the aluminum angle iron method described here. gm

    Super A carb problems

I've restored 3 or 4 little binders and I always scrounged up a Marvel carb that would fit the application rather than mess with the Zenith. Salvage yards that have the old stuff have a lot of small MS carbs. I never found small Zeniths to be to my liking. The Marvels are super simple to clean...

Valve tappet setting rule of thumb

Is there a "rule of thumb" for setting valve clearance on older solid lifter engines if you don't have the specs? Something that uses pushrod length x diameter, solid vs hollow, for example? Just curious. gm

    tuning carb, ignition , timing

I ran across an old M&W dyno that had "issues" and I got it for a hundred bucks, The cooling tubes had frozen and broke, and the gauge/dial didn't work, but, it would crank down the engines of our tractors when you put the screws to it. We had to judge everything by ear but that sufficed for us. gm
