    It's possible that your gauge is receiving higher voltage from the alternator,,a new gauge may deal with that better, one way of checking this is to remove the hot wire on your alternator and see if it makes a difference..

    You won't notice the difference,, most front wheel assist are 5-7% faster on the front, and any front wheel assist tractor will fill the front wheels off quickly if you run them on a hard road when engauged .
