    Find of the day

It was a fairly common H-1 plow. Interesting that the pictures showed both a hand-lift lever as well as a hydraulic cylinder and associated mounting bracket for a Power Lift version....

    Model H shifter adjustment

That shifter shaft (H382R before S/N 10000, H714R for all later tractors) is to be positioned as follows: “To properly align sliding gears, move shifter shaft to right or left until the second speed gears have full tooth width contact when the gear shifter detent is in the proper notch. Full...

    Is Two-cylinder magazine still published?

    Here are subscription numbers for the last 20 years of Two-Cylinder taken from the required annual posting of USPS Form 3526 in the magazine: 2005 20432 2006 21077 2007 18666 2008 18527 2009 16819 2010 15681 2011 14792 2012 14209 2013 13124 2014 12812 2015 11489 2016...

41 Model H inconsistent starting by hand

As teddy52food mentioned, you certainly could hold the spark plug wire 1/4" away from the block and then rotate the flywheel, but it's not easy to hold the plug wire steady and rotate the flywheel at the same time - by yourself. I made a very simple "tester" that lets me connect a plug wire to...

41 Model H inconsistent starting by hand

Although the early Owner’s Manuals state that a magneto should be able to make a spark to jump a 1/8” gap, the later SM-2029 (John Deere Electrical Systems Service Manual) says that a magneto must be able to make a spark jump a 9 mm gap (0.35”, which is between 5/16” and 3/8”) consistently...

    H oil pump

That D2425R Pilot is actually riveted into the leaf spring which makes it an assembly with P/N AH590R, so it would be better just to acquire the assembly. I happen to have a spare assembly as well as the H312R spring. Let me know if you're interested in those pieces.

    JD A Serial # Question

John Deere, Two-Cylinder, and Green Magazine all state that the beginning serial number for the 1947 model “A” was 569610 and the beginning serial number for 1948 was 587349. That establishes that S/N 577582 is a 1947 tractor. The so-called “early styled” tractors used structural angles which...

    JD A Serial # Question

Tractordata information is "correct". It corresponds to beginning serial numbers currently endorsed by Two-Cylinder, Green Magazine and Mr. Thinker's Almanac, and most importantly, Deere and Company. Yesterday's Tractors and others who merely copied the bad information has maintained the old...

    1938 Unstyled B Magneto blew up :(

According to Magneto Application Charts compiled by the late Duane Larson, your 1938 “B” (S/N 46175 – 59999) would have been originally furnished with a WICO AP magneto. Deere apparently alternated between that AP and a Fairbanks-Morse DRV2B magnetos throughout early model “B” production. When...

    1938 Unstyled B Magneto blew up :(

Your 1938 "B" requires a long-lug drive cup, and your broken one is a #3744 which is a 35 degree lag angle, long lug cup. One source for a replacement is McDonald Carb. Their part number 94-5354 which is identified as a WICO 3744. It is listed for $59.95.

John Deere H transmission oil fill location?

Those illustrations are from older Instructions and Parts Lists ("owners manuals") that were furnished with tractors until around the mid 1940's when those were replaced by "Operators Manuals".

John Deere H transmission oil fill location?

It depends on the serial number. Below S/N 10000, the fill plug was on the left (see the picture on the right), and all later tractors had the fill plug on the right side of the top transmission cover. It can be confusing, and the last operators manual didn't even show the fill location....

    John Deere H float trouble

I’ve experienced that myself. It seems that the viton-tipped needle tends to jam into the relatively sharp edges of the hole in the float valve body. Several carburetor people have recommended a process of taking a small stainless ball (from a little ball bearing or something similar), dropping...

    1940 JD H

The sheet-metal flipper guard is not removeable from the rear bearing housing of the Power Shaft since the hinge pins are pressed into the bearing housing. Deere intended for the entire bearing housing to be replaced if the flipper guard was damaged. (The Master Shield is designed to hold the...

    John Deere H Fan

No. Deere’s recommended procedure involved removing the governor, fan shaft, and fan as an assembly to get to the fan. And to do that, you need to remove the air cleaner, air pipe from the cleaner to the carburetor, the exhaust and breather pipes, the fuel sediment bowl, and the magneto, and you...

    1939 H

As others have stated, there should always be an equal number (thickness) of shims on each side (or within 0.003”, one laminate thickness). The picture is an excerpt from an early Instruction and Parts Manual. Notice the wording “…should fit snugly, but not tight enough to bind.” I’m not a fan...

    1939 Model H

You said the cylinder walls looked good, but was there much of a ring ridge on the walls? If there’s a significant ring ridge, even though the rings might be stuck, it might be time for a rebore, and then the $$$ start adding up. If there’s very little ring ridge, you might consider pulling the...

    1939 Model H

If the flywheel is properly timed to the crankshaft, and if the flywheel is rotated so the “LH IMPULSE” letters are at the 3 o’clock position, the LH piston will be at TDC. And if the LH piston happens to be at the end of the exhaust stroke, all the other timing marks will align with each other...

    1939 Model H

The gear on the crankshaft has a projecting hub which, if installed backwards, will interfere with the LH main bearing housing, so it’s not likely that would be an issue. Besides, didn’t you already state the timing dots on the crank gear and the cam gear are timed correctly, which means you saw...
