960 rear main engine oil seal progress

Well guys, thanks to all your input, I'll call this one a win! Got the bearing cap put back on last week and let it sit till yesterday to let the RTV cure. Put the pan on, put the oil in and started it up. At first for about 2 minutes, I got about 1/4 cup of oil from the inspection opening that...

960 rear main engine oil seal progress

Hi Hobo. Thanks for help guiding me installing my new seals. One question if you don't mind. I'm going to use the original fiber side seals that came out undamaged. When you say to use sealer on them before reinstalling them, how did you do that? Just put some sealer on the side that contacts...

960 rear main engine oil seal progress

Showcrop. I'll probably do as you recommend and use the fiber seals that came out undamaged. Do I put a bead of RTV silicone sealer in the groove and then push in the old seal and then put a small bead on the other side before sliding it up in place? Just not sure of the process you suggest. I...

960 rear main engine oil seal progress

Well, by some act of God and a few tips from you guys on here, I got the main down and both halves of the seal came out relatively easy. I loosened the center main about 1/2 a turn and then tried a flat punch on one end of the upper seal to push it out. Didn't move hardly at all. Then I tried...

    960 rear main engine seal

As previously posted, I have a rear main oil seal leaking on my 960. Some say it can be changed in place from underneath, others say the engine needs to be removed and put on a stand. For $25 or so, I can get the FelPro rubber seal kit off Amazon and give it a shot in place. If succesful, it's a...

    960 oil leak

Once I get this 960 up to operating temp and then shut it down after using it a while, I get this drip for a bit. It stops after about 5 miutes or so after leaking about a 1/2 of shotglass of oil from the weep hole with the cotter key. It's definately engine oil. What do you think? Main seal...

    960 leveling arm crank

Any tips or tricks for freeing up the leveling arm crank on a 960? Mine is stuck solid. So far I've pulled the grease plug that was completly dry and sprayed in a bunch of Kroil. I also coated exposed threads and anywhere else the Kroil could seep in. I'm figuring its rusted up in there. Thanks!

6 volt positive ground with alternator

Well, after reading all the replies and going back and forth to the 960 looking at the wiring and condition of cables and things, I've decided to follow the advice from you guys and just go ahead and tear all the old stuff out and change it over to 12V. Just has too many areas that look like...

6 volt positive ground with alternator

Here's the picture of the alternator. Positive ground 1957 960. Sorry. Forgot that in original post. And a pic of the wiring mess that needs cleaning up too. Lot of loose and rusted connections. A bunch of crack, frayed and different gage wires as well. Will just take time and some new...

FORD TRACTORS - ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS 101

Here's the pics you asked for. It's from a 1957 960. Forgot to put that in my original post. Sorry. I'm getting 8.4 volts off the terminal on back of alternator. That wire connects directly to one side of the ammeter which does read at that value. From the other side of the ammeter, it connects...

6 volt positive ground with alternator

Would anyone have a diagram handy for a 6 volt positive ground with alternator to upload here? Have my hard copy service manual on the way but won't be in till next week. The tractor has a pretty cobbled up wiring job I'm trying to get straightend out. One wire alternator is putting out 8.5...

    Fuel shut off replacement

Would anyone have the link or contact information for the guy who makes the replacement fuel shut off's? I saw it on here a while back but for the life of me can't find it in the archives. It was a complete different assembly from the lever type but he manufactured them in his shop. I think they...

    1957 960

I think I have a problem......Could't just drive on by.....Noooooo...........Saw the weights and new rears and had to stop. I offered, he countered, I countered, he countered, I countered, he accepted. Now it's in my driveway. Front and rear weights, new rear tires, fronts about 80- 85%, purrs...

    Screw type fuel shut off

Anyone have an old OEM screw type fuel shut off they would like to part with? I bought a 960 with a lever type that leaks like they normally do. Want to replace it with an original screw in type but not buy one of the junk ones off Amazon or Ebay. I assume the mounting screws and flange are the...

    20 acre tractor

It's actually pretty sandy, soft soil. The hunting ground has only been mowed for the last 15 years. It would need some serious work to get it turned I would bet.

    20 acre tractor

What would be my best bet for a working tractor for 20 acres tillable? I've had several old Fords. A 4000 4 cyclinder, a couple 961's an 861 and a Jubilee. Those were more just hobbies. Never really worked any of them except for some brush hogging and snow plowing. Now I have a place with some...

    1961 Industrial

Would anyone have a rough idea what this might weigh with the loader, weights and rear box? Came up for sale not too far from me and I'm thinking about it. Ad describes it as a 1961 Industrial. Only concern is my tandem axle 18 foot trailer is only rated for 7K. Pretty sure I can't put any more...

    901

Wasn't really looking but this came up locally by me. Going to need a retirement project shortly and was thinking about it. Think it's worth a 5 or $700 offer? Never had an SOS and know NOTHING about them. Could letting them sit that long destroy them? I'm sure the motor probably needs to be...
