MF 285 - Hydraulic Filter removal

I got it off with a strap wrench. The cover is thick so I'm no longer worried about cracking it

MF 285 - Hydraulic Filter removal

Is there a trick to getting this filter housing off or just muscle it off? I am concerned I'm going to crack the housing trying to twist it off using the bolt on the bottom. I've used a breaker bar and it's not budging. Thanks

MF 285 Remotes / Hydraulic Questions

My MF 285 has 2 remote hookups. I have recently realized that the set on the right (controlled by the taller lever) has very limited power. It will engage the drive on a fertilizer spreader but will not operate the lift hydraulic on a shredder. Is this normal? If not, what could be some...

MF 285 and Bush Hog 10 ft rotary cutter- proper setup and operation?

Thanks for all the input. I was able to run the mower with the current setup as long as I took wide turns and was careful not to compress the PTO shaft. The PTO on the MF 285 is independent of the transmission ... it did not turn off even when depressing the clutch. Engaging / disengaging at...

MF 285 and Bush Hog 10 ft rotary cutter- proper setup and operation?

Thanks. That answers and confirms some of my questions.

MF 285 and Bush Hog 10 ft rotary cutter- proper setup and operation?

Thanks! Remaining on the tractor while the PTO is engaged will be my practice. And I will have a look under the tractor. Would an overrun clutch prolong the life of the PTO brake or are they made to handle the cutters wind-down? Is throttling down before disengaging the PTO a good idea?

MF 285 and Bush Hog 10 ft rotary cutter- proper setup and operation?

I purchased a MF 285 a few months back for pasture work and just acquired a Bush Hog 3210 10' pull type cutter. I have not used the PTO on a tractor in 45+ years and have a lot of respect for them. Out of a desire for personal safety and correct equipment operation & protection, I would...

MF 285 - Breather fitting on valve cover

Thanks for the reply. I have wondered what this fixed tubular bracket is for. I assume it is #59? Is the end of the hose just supposed to be open to the air? If so, does it need a screen or filter over the end?

MF 285 - Breather fitting on valve cover

When cleaning up a MF 285 I noticed this breather connection (upper right of the pic) on the valve cover had no hose. I found a hose in the parts book, but I could not tell exactly where it connects ... any ideas? Should it feed back into the air intake somewhere? Also, what problems could...

MF 285 - Head Gasket? / Oil Leak

Since it appears the tach has been replaced, that is a good place to look. Thanks!

MF 285 - Head Gasket? / Oil Leak

Thanks. Hope that is the problem. I will dig in a little deeper next time I am out there. I am skeptical of the 180 hours as well. The tach / hour gauge looks slightly less aged than the other gauges. What should be the fractional hours dial is a blank / black dial that does not move. Is...

MF 285 - Head Gasket? / Oil Leak

I will do that and see if I can identify the specific source or sources around the engine. There was a power steering fluid leak, but a hose replacement solved that. I have been surprised at how leaky the tractor is. It must of had a good cleaning just prior to purchase as I did not see any...

MF 285 - Head Gasket? / Oil Leak

That would certainly be the preferred source. The oil does seem to be coming from up high. I will check it out. Thanks.
