I think I may have goofed my water pump.

Hi folks, 401C here, and I'm rebuilding the water pump with the kit from Reliance. My impeller was plastic, and broken. The one I'm installing is metal. I've got it pressed on that shaft with about a .015" clearance with regards to the mating surface of the pump housing. I think that's about...

    JD 219 diesel engine woes

I'm the one who brought this thread back from the dead because I had an engine that might have been useful for the OP. I know it's old. Then again, so am I. Thanks though.

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

I think I mentioned earlier the holes were on the injection pump side. I think I was wrong about that. I finally got my cyl 1 sleeve out, and paid attention to what side the holes were on, and it was the cam side! I also noticed that the casting is much closer to the sleeve on the cam side than...

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

As part of this little experiment. I brazed a brake cylinder and didn't distort it at all. The nickel rods are not only ridiculously expensive, a stick approach would put quite a bit more heat into the part, minimum 2200*. Brazing happens at about 1000. Of course I could goof it and heat up the...

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

I never thought of that either, the pitting is always in the same spot, on the injection pump side not the cam side, I believe. I'm still fighting with getting cyl 1 out. Before I do, I'll score a little reference mark on the sleeve and see what side it's happening on. I do know that it's almost...

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

Just for fun, here's a pic of the cavitation. I'm holding a flashlight so the light shines through. I drew a red line pointing to it.

Is it True? Milwaukee and Ryobi made in same factory.

I used to be a warranty repair center for Ryobi, Ridgid, Milwaukee, PowerStroke and a few other consumer grade power tools. The Milwaukee and Ryobi consumer grade stuff, the cheaper stuff on the shelf at big box stores are all the pretty much the same. Owned / made by TTI (a terrible company to...

Preserving hydraulic hoses, floating an idea

The sun I think is what's hardest on most hoses' exteriors. Just being in the elements. I often wonder if they'd last longer if they were routed in such a way that they could be in the shade. Not terribly practical, I guess.

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

When I came up with the idea, I thought it sounded like a fun thing to try. I bet it would work. But, if it didn't, I'd have to tear it back apart. If the cylinder kits were $5K, I'd definitely give it a try, but I think I can be in and out for under $1500 total. Nah. I'll play it straight this...

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

it was a fun sort of academic thought exercise. I bet it would work, and probably run for years. But the engine's already apart, and the parts aren't that expensive. I'll put new parts in! Thanks for your thoughts!

    Deere 410C cylinder liner cavitation.

Hi folks, I've worked on 4 or 5 of these old 300/400 series mechanical Deeres over the years and every one of em has failed for the same reason; the user put the wrong coolant in, and the cylinder liners cavitated. For the record, it's not a design flaw of the machine. I'm quite fond of these...

    401C shift pattern

What's really odd is that I can find the manual with my iphone, but when I try to use my regular computer, it gives me 404 not found, no matter what I search for. It doesn't seem to matter if I sign up for an account or not. Doesn't matter if I use Mozilla or Edge either. The important thing is...

    401C shift pattern

Thank you so much! I didn't even know that site was there. The "extra" position is C, which is Park, which would explain my core issue, which was, why did I have a gear position that didn't make me move? Much appreciated!

    401C shift pattern

Hi folks, I have a Deere 401C and I have a question about the shift pattern for the range stick (the one on the left). I did some googling, and what info I found suggests that the stick is simply high and low. Forward for low and back for high. But my machine, I swear there are 3 detents. 3 gear...

    Deere 401C hydraulic help

Well you hit the nail on the head, I think. Yes wiggling the steering wheel does help, as does using the lift (until it tops out anyway). And lo and behold, while I was messing with the engine, I noticed a puddle of oil under it, right under the steering gear. So, there's a few things...

    Deere 401C hydraulic help

Hi folks, Well I assume my problem is hydraulic. I'm working on a late '70s (guess) Deere 401C, and when I crank the engine over with the starter motor, after maybe 20 seconds or so, the starter motor really labors and cranking RPM drops. Almost like it would act if a hydraulic circuit were...
